One Big, Fat, Emmy ZING

by rachaelgking on July 8, 2010 · 56 comments

Today, the 2010 Emmy nominations were announced.  This year was better than most, with “Friday Night Lights” at least being recognized for its outstanding cast (I am convinced that Tami and Eric Taylor are an actual married couple coaching football in Texas.  They are that good.)

The world's most perfect couple. Take note.

Some general thoughts:

While “Lost” may have been a life changing experience for you, I just haven’t gotten into it (yet).  At some lonely point in my life I’m sure I’ll devote a month to watching the entire series and then self-flagellate for ever daring to speak ill of “The Gospel According to J.J.”  Sorry, y’all. This is one hatch I’m just not going down.

Saturday Night Live should never receive an award for anything.  However, Betty White was nominated for her appearance on the show – I’ll allow it.

Likewise, “Two and A Half Men” should be immediately canceled and Charlie Sheen should be locked up so he can’t do any more damage. Oh, wait- isn’t that happening? Furthermore, I have a visceral dislike for anything on CBS.  However, I do enjoy their “CSI: Ghost Whisper – LA.”

While I wasn’t initially in love with “Treme” (I know it is unfair to compare it to the Wire, but it was somewhat underwhelming) some of the acting in the show was undeniably amazing. Bunk, I love you, man.

Also, if I saw the “Best Actor in a Comedy” noms five years ago they may have made sense.  Today, not so much.  I get it, Tony Shalhoub, Larry David and this Jim Parsons character are neurotic- it’s gotten old.  And let’s face facts, The Office is no longer funny (with the exception of Andy Bernard, and that’s partially because I hear the Tiger Song in my head every time he’s on screen).

I’ve never seen “The Good Wife.”  I don’t plan to.

Sidebar: Alec Baldwin, you are a golden god.

I really like Sons of Anarchy, and I love your write-in of John Noble for “Fringe”. How come more people aren’t taking note of that show? Love it!

2 lexa July 8, 2010 at 2:43 pm

I dunno, man, I think Kurt is the heart of Glee. I think Chris Colfer deserves it.

And yes, Peggy is not a supporting actress; she is a lead.

3 Lisa July 8, 2010 at 2:46 pm

True Blood being a drama kind of confuses me. It’s just so goofy (I mean, have they seen Jason Stackhouse?), I didn’t think it was intended to be dramatic. The one-liners!!! You mean to tell me those great lines, like “conscience off, dick on” are supposed to be dramatic???

4 Liz @ Dogs & Wine July 8, 2010 at 2:47 pm

“ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Charlie Day (Charlie)“Always Sunny in Philadelphia)”

YESSSS!!! KITTEN MITTONS!

5 Kathy July 8, 2010 at 2:52 pm

I’m with you 100% on the Friday Night Lights! That show is amazing and they are absolutely the BEST married couple on television. They make it look so real :)

6 pithycomments July 8, 2010 at 2:53 pm

I cannot wait for you to become a follower of The Gospel According to J.J. Alias, Lost, Star Trek, Fringe…the man makes my nerdy panties melt!

7 T. The Destructor July 8, 2010 at 3:08 pm

@pithycomments,

J.J. Always had me at Alias. I’ve been his ever since.

8 Nora July 8, 2010 at 2:57 pm

SONS OF ANARCHY! Oh, how I love that show. What about Rescue Me? (or did I miss that above!? They deserve some love on here too because that show rocks. Most shows on FX do.)

I’m glad to see Toni Collette was on there because she rocks in US of Tara, but John Corbett does too (unless again, I missed him).

We should do our own 20SB awards for these people and then somehow figure out a way to meet them because Charlie Dunham (i think that’s his name) from Sons of Anarchy? He’s so mine :)

9 Shannon July 8, 2010 at 3:00 pm

I think Mad Men and Glee both should win in their categories though I do heart Modern Family as well. My one true love will always be The Office thanks to Jim Halpert but I agree this past season kinda sucked balls and I’m actually looking foward to Steve Carrell leaving.

10 T. The Destructor July 8, 2010 at 3:06 pm

I fail to see how Glee is a comedy. Unless you count that it is comical how bad the acting is. Otherwise, it doesn’t belong in that category.

*sigh* God television has hit the skids. I actually liked what I saw of Nurse Jackie, but I haven’t seen more than 4 episodes. But above all Mad Men (Peggy FTW!) and True Blood have my vote.

11 jen July 8, 2010 at 3:08 pm

YES! THANK YOU! Adam Scott is so HIGHLY underrated! Party Down kills it!
and Toni in US of Tara is hands-down my winner. the Amy Poehler is commendable and Tina Fey is hilarious but they’re not doing what Toni is. i think there should be a different category for Comediennes in a Comedy and let those 2 fight it out.
and i’m still stuck on this one, Glee is a comedy????

12 Jayme (The Random Blogette) July 8, 2010 at 3:10 pm

I love that you put Charlie Day and Danny Devito in! Always Sunny is the bestest show ever! I also agree with your addition of Fringe. That show is uh-mazing! I stopped watching The Office because Fringe and Grey’s Anatomy are usually on when The Office is on and I can only record two shows at once (stupid DVR) but from what I have heard it was a good choice to stop watching it!

13 kate July 8, 2010 at 3:11 pm

Thank God that there is someone else out there who hates Charlie Sheen and the fat kid as much as I do. “Two and a Half Men” makes me want the terrorists to win.

14 Rachel @ MWF Seeking BFF July 8, 2010 at 3:11 pm

You had me until you had to go hating on Mariska Hargitay. What did she ever do to you? She saves raped little girls! That said, I am pulling for Connie this year. She is friggin unbelievable and I want to be her when I grow up.

I’m with you re: Two and a Half Men. Given the way things I root for generally go, I’m convinced Jon Cryer will win because even though I have a nerd-crush on Duckie (Pretty in Pink? Duh) I am obsessed with every other nominee in that category and thus am conviced that stupid Cryer will win. I mean. Phil Dunphy?? Barney Siut-Up-Doogie-Howser Stinson? These are comedic geniuses. [I notice now that you forgot to even include Jon Cryer in your nominees list. This is perhaps because you have blocked him out. Understandable.]

15 Nicole July 8, 2010 at 3:12 pm

I completely agree with your complete and utter dislike for anything on CBS. It’s the old people’s network & nothing they air is funny.

Not everyone is a LOST fan and I can appreciate that but the actors nominated Matthew Fox, Terry O’Quinn & Michael Emerson are amazing actors who did phenomenal work on that show.

I also enjoy Glee & am so happy that Jane Lynch got nominated but I feel that the show shouldn’t be in the ‘comedy’ category. I don’t think it should be in the ‘drama’ category either – I think it’s time for the Emmys make some amends to their list.

Also being a Parks & Rec fan, I was sad to see they didn’t get more nods. I think you will also enjoy this: http://bit.ly/cGWAQn

16 Danielle July 8, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Nurse Jackie is a comedy?

I agree with you about Two and a Half Men. I’ve really never understood what people find so great about this show.

17 Lisa July 8, 2010 at 4:11 pm

@Danielle, I was wondering about Nurse Jackie too. I guess it could be dark comedy, but the whole drug addict thing isn’t really funny. Definitely doesn’t seem to be in the same category as Modern Family….

18 Ashburnite July 8, 2010 at 3:21 pm

I don’t understand how “True Blood” only got one measly nomination. I agree with your replacement of Martin Short with “Alexander Skarsgard (Oh god YES).” Probably one of the sexiest men on TV right now.

And I’m glad that no one (with a brain) seems to like “Two and a Half Men.” That show makes me wish I was blind….and deaf.

19 Skylers Dad July 8, 2010 at 3:31 pm

I just love me some Big Bang Theory, but then I am a card carrying geek.

20 Whit July 8, 2010 at 3:38 pm

I love you even more for this. Friday Night Lights and Mad Men are THE BEST SHOWS on TV [and I love Glee too] hands down. They are everything that is/was/has been awesome about America in the last century.

21 jerrod July 8, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Is it weird that even though I DVR Friday Night Lights, I still watch and listen to the intro and theme song?

You’re picks and obvious superb tastes (Sunny, Party Down, Parks)…I’m with you.

22 hillbillyduhn July 8, 2010 at 3:45 pm

I don’t watch that much t.v.

I do like Ghost Whisperer. And a few others, but as for F.N.L and Mad Men, and Glee or Lost, no, don’t watch any of it…. I know, probably makes me lame, but…

23 Karen July 8, 2010 at 3:53 pm

LOVE FNL! So happy to see Coach & Tami get some recognition. I was hoping Saracen would get a nomination too, but baby steps.

I love your write-ins, Always Sunny and Party Down DEFINITELY should have gotten some love!!!

24 C_Girl July 8, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Nurse Jackie is a comedy? Since when? I’d hate to see the writers’ idea of a tragedy.

25 KassyK July 8, 2010 at 4:17 pm

I cannot wait for you to join us Losties. Especially with the kind of drama you love and your love of sci fi and the acting and the love and the mysteries and the great comedic timing and lines–ahhh you will be obsessed. In a good way.

That being said–so happy about True Blood and Mad Men too. Party Down rules. Love it.

Although I am pulling for LOST for everything–not just because I’m a super fan but because in terms of acting, no one can touch Terry O’Quinn or Michael Emerson and even Matthew Fox (this season). Those guys are the kind of actors that television rarely gets the pleasure of seeing. And the writing and directing of the show is brilliant even when maddening.

And you know I love me some John Noble. I would cross out Slattery (doesn’t get enough screentime) or Martin Short for him. Anyday.

Woo!

26 Herself July 8, 2010 at 4:21 pm

Definitely agree with you about Jane Lynch. TRAVESTY if she doesn’t get it. And I totally love Glee, it’s my fourth all-time favourite show…. which is pretty good going for something with only one season under its comedic belt. Dunno if Lea Michele deserves it just yet tho… Maybe next year?

January Jones is on my list of “If I batted for the other team” women, so I want her to win just so I can listen to her acceptance speech and oogle her.

27 Marissa July 8, 2010 at 4:25 pm

LOST is basically Hot Tub Time Machine, but without all the awesome. Save yourself the misery of caring about something that will give you nothing in return but the thought that it was Hot Tub Time Machine without all the awesome. Seriously.

28 Molly Mouse July 8, 2010 at 4:28 pm

So, as the obsessed “Soup” fan, I must say that Joel McHale got ripped off. They should add a catagory just for him… “Best Wearer of Skinny Ties”. :P

29 Tonya July 8, 2010 at 4:37 pm

#1. I thought I was the ONLY person in the world not caught up in all that “LOST” crap. And I actually tried to get swept up in all of the hysteria by watching nearly all of Season 1 (all but the last 2 episodes). I hated it and didn’t want to have to think so hard about a stupid TV show. Gimme trash-reality TV a-la VH1 and I’m all over it.

#2. “Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is the best comedy on TV. I LOVE THOSE ASSHOLES!

30 alexa - cleveland's a plum July 8, 2010 at 4:47 pm

you are pretty spot on lady!

31 LB July 8, 2010 at 5:00 pm

I don’t get “Two and a Half Men” either. It. Is Not. Funny. Period. I can’t believe people actually watch that crap!

I also agree with Tami and Eric from “Friday Night Lights.” They are the cutest couple ever!!! I <3 that show.

32 LC July 8, 2010 at 5:12 pm

I’ve never gotten into Lost either but I was an Alias fan back in the day. (and I personally follow the Gospel of Joss.)

I am a big, BIG fan of Dexter and Breaking Bad. If you haven’t seen them, you should try ‘em out. Unique and very very smart.

I’m with you on all the other stuff but I’ve never seen Friday Night Lights. Maybe I should check it out…

33 Christina Harper July 8, 2010 at 5:13 pm

I don’t watch any of the Emmy nominated shows. It’s all a popularity contest, just like the Oscars and the Grammys. I go off the beaten path… we’ve got kiddie shows and Winchesters there, so it’s all good. I have actually seen Glee, Modern Family, and True Blood, though, but I liked all of them before they became fads. Lol. So whenever others started liking them, I kind of started to not to.

34 Larissa July 8, 2010 at 5:14 pm

I totally have to agree with you…Love Love Love Friday Night Lights!! Every time it comes on, I park my butt in front of the TV and put my phone on silent…Of course I have had a major crush on Kyle Chandler since he was on the show Homefront. An hour is never long enough for that show.

35 tillie July 8, 2010 at 5:50 pm

um i don’t even know you anymore. How can you not only not choose Jim Parsons but scratch his ass out???? you are dead to me.

36 Jeney July 8, 2010 at 5:51 pm

I have a hard time believing that Tami and Eric aren’t married, either. They’re chemistry is too perfect.

And Riggins? Yes, please.

37 Ashley, the Accidental Olympian July 8, 2010 at 6:05 pm

Girrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrl you fucked that list up!

But I agree. More True Blood, more Treme (for the acting, not the plot. Although I can actually feel my boyfriend hissing at me for daring to write such slander), and no more Glee.

Me thinks I need to rent Friday Night Lights. Someone has a serious hard on for Friday Night Lights.

38 Lil' Woman July 8, 2010 at 6:12 pm

I love Sons of Anarchy….now that’s a fucking show that should win some awards, did you see the season finale?

39 Rahul July 8, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Since I’m a TV geek and I’ve seen all these shows I’ll say this

Glee is the worst written show to ever get nominated for an Emmy. I’m including Two and a Half Men in that. What a farce. Will Schuster is so poorly written it is cringe worthy.

Breaking Bad is the best drama on TV, sorry Mad Men, it’s not close. And Bryan Cranston should always be nominated for leading actor in a drama, but Matthew Fox stole this award from him this year. Dude was amazing this season and that’s from a show that I think has two of the best actors on TV in Michael Emerson and Terry O’Quinn.

40 Tigerlily July 8, 2010 at 8:36 pm

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. For saying you hate “2 and a Half Men. I can NOT stand that show and everyone I know thinks its funny. Not Funny.

41 Jessica July 8, 2010 at 9:56 pm

Wow I have lots to say on this. And again, we are SO similar :)

I am VERY glad that FNL finally got recognized. Kyle and Connie are amazing and my favorite part of that show. I want one of them to win so bad. I agree that Steve Carell should either win or stop nominating him. He’s not funny on that show anymore. I’m just glad Amy Poehler was recognized and that Two and a Half Men wasn’t. I hate that show.

42 fojoy July 8, 2010 at 9:59 pm

John Noble is super-fantastico in Fringe – he was robbed!
I love Christina Hendricks – Long Live Joanie!

43 maddy July 8, 2010 at 10:34 pm

Charlie Sheen pays over $100,000 a month in child support, his life sucks!

I agree with you that IASIP should have been nominated in every category!! I can’t believe they weren’t, that’s a goddamn shame. (Idiots!!! savages!!)

44 Harini July 9, 2010 at 2:41 am

Glee is amazing :) .

45 Hermia July 9, 2010 at 9:18 am

Ah SNL is cool….sometimes…..now and again…..well definitely that one time….

And yeah, down with Lost….it was only nominated as a celebration of the fact it’s FINALLY OVER!
The Good Wife is…..good….not great. Like it’s easy viewing and keeps you amused, but you don’t rush in to watch it every week!
Modern Family…Gold.
FNL….never seen it, but I will now I know it was your support!
House….so old….so not fun anymore.
But I do love me some Monk during the daytime TV slot!

And dammit, why didn’t Grey’s get a nod! I JUST STARTED WATCHING IT LAST WEEK!!! I have jinxed it.

46 Jaime @ La vie...J'aime July 9, 2010 at 9:36 am

I’ve heard Fri Night Lights is so good- haven’t seen an ep though :(

Glad Lost was nominated- love that show and Modern Fam, Glee, and The Good Wife (SO GOOD)

Happy Friday!!!

47 Allison Blass July 9, 2010 at 9:40 am

I really don’t watch TV anymore so I’m at a loss how to comment. I keep saying I’m going to start watching all of these shows, and then I don’t. I’ve seen a handful of all these awesome TV shows but then I never watch consistently. I really need to get my DVR action on…

48 Clécio July 9, 2010 at 1:50 pm

I’m rooting for Mariska Hargitay, this wonderful actress, fantastic. I know she will not win but at least I will see her beautiful, beautiful as always, the red carpet.

49 Jen July 9, 2010 at 3:08 pm

I am a LOST fan but Michael Emerson was the best actor on the show! He should not be crossed off.

John Noble was the best part of Frange (besides looking at Joshua).

50 Heather July 9, 2010 at 3:28 pm

What’s with the hate for House? Hugh Laurie is a Brit doing an American accent AND has to remember all the funny medical terms. AND he always walks with a limp. AND he had an effin’ awesome season (especially season finale). He’s comedic GENIUS but manages to ROCK the dramatic.

(Um.. and he’s really hot. That should count too, right?)

51 Kellie July 9, 2010 at 5:22 pm

I’ve been told by so many people that I have now lost count that I look like Amy Poehler. What do you think? I’m not seeing it but I wouldn’t take it as an insult b/c I think she’s a cute lady. :)

Also, True Blood. Anything True Blood. That is a win in my book.

52 andhari July 11, 2010 at 1:49 pm

I so wish Glee wins a lot of awards because they deserve it!:D

Charlie Sheen is the most annoying man on tv!

53 Patty Duke July 12, 2010 at 1:36 pm

What’s eith all of this “2 and a Half Men” hating ? Doesn’t anyone appreciate disfunctional family comedy? Whith a mother like theirs, how can the turn out any different?

54 terra July 12, 2010 at 9:19 pm

I really, really, really do not understand who the hell watches “Two and a Half Men.” And I don’t understand why it’s been on forever and ever. It’s lame-sauce. For sure. And Charlie Sheen? You can practically see the cooties crawling all over him.

55 Renee July 14, 2010 at 11:09 am

Two and a Half Men is the worse fucking thing television has ever broadcast.

56 Amanda July 14, 2010 at 4:25 pm

I only saw a few episodes of The Good Wife, but I really liked it. But probably only because I’m in law school.

I wish that Thomas Gibson had been nominated for Criminal Minds.
