Challenge 5 | I Want My MTV
Open for 3 days ‐ from 12:00am (EST) July 18 2010 to 12:00pm (noon EST) July 20, 2010.Personal: What three MTV moments have resonated with you most?
This is the LAST challenge, boys and girls! At least until five of us are in NYC in August… so let’s do it!
1. DARIA.
Believe it or not, I actually wasn’t allowed to watch MTV as a kid. I think Moms let up more somewhere along the line in high school, but for the most part, it was a no no.
…So, of course, my sister and I watched it constantly in the basement, and had the remote control poised to click “LAST CHANNEL” back to National Geographic or something equally educational/unlikely that we would ever be watching. We’re tricksy like that.
I’m not sure who we thought we were fooling, but bottom line was this: there was no way in hell we were missing our beloved “Daria”. La la la LA laaaaaaaaaaaa…
As a fellow angst-filled teenager wasting away in a generic suburban town, misunderstood by parents, teachers and peers alike… okay, that’s not true. I was a pretty happy kid who got good grades, had bad hair days, got her heart broken a couple times, and occasionally got punished for slamming a door in her father’s face.
The truth is, it was just really, really funny. Daria was real, if a bit exaggerated for comedic purposes. She was also smart as hell, and she was the first person who showed me that being “quirky” could be a good thing. If only I knew then how far my “quirkiness” would take me…
I think the New York Times put it best, calling Daria ”a blend of Dorothy Parker, Fran Lebowitz and Janeane Garofalo, wearing Carrie Donovan’s glasses. Daria Morgendorffer, 16 and cursed with a functioning brain, has the misfortune to see high school, her family and her life for exactly what they are, and the temerity to comment on it.”
She sure did. And my sister and I, we ate it up.
My only complaint? Never seeing her love for Trent requited. Daria, grab your proverbial cojones and TELL THE MAN, already!!!
Le sigh.
2. My Favorite Real World: LAS VEGAS
Being that I had to sneak my MTV at home, it wasn’t until I got to college that I really was able to enjoy Real World in its entirety and not just in stolen snippets; to follow a house for its entire journey: the ups, the downs, the fights, the drunks, the hookups galore. One glorious Saturday in ’06, I plopped down on the couch and flipped around, when I suddenly noticed a marathon viewing of the entire RW Las Vegas had started.
Well, hot damn.
Alton, Arissa, Steven, Irulan, Frank, Brynn, and Trishelle. I spent the next two days of my life with them, and was truly devastated when it was over.
You guys don't know me... but I kind of love you.
This show had everything. I was rooting for fellow Masshole Arissa and her anger management issues (at least for some entertainment) off the bat. Alton and Irulan’s passionate on again, off again romance was absolutely gripping- it was like watching a movie. Okay, well, or Skinemax. Either way. (Halfway through, I actually got up and Googled to see if they were still together… sad face.) At least at the end of the season, they drove off into the sunset together… that was enough for me.
Then we had nice guy Frank who lost out on seemingly sweet-turned-promiscuous Trishelle to wannabe bad boy Steve, who, oh, by the way, is going through a divorce! But how about he and Trishelle keep on banging until she has a pregnancy scare? Wonderful. Brynn and her panic attacks… and THE FORK, oh my God, the fork!!! She chucks a fork at Steven, who she’s desperately in love with, and almost gets kicked out, but then he realizes how she’s “just like HE was when he was younger” (read: a hot mess) and boom, Bonding City!
I truly don’t think I’ve ever been as entertained as I was for that beautiful weekend. And it was the main reason I couldn’t WAIT to get to Sin City in May for BISC. No, I didn’t get to stay in a 6-room, $5,000/night suite, and the only flirting I did was with my roommate Maxie, but I was so excited to see the world’s biggest playground; a place that I knew only as Real World Season 12′s set.
I think it’s time for another RWLV reunion show, if you ask me. Or maybe just another RW Vegas entirely… *volunteers*
3. TRL, THE FINALE.
I grew up with TRL, and I did it in the Boy Band era. I’ll be honest. I loved every. freaking. second of it. There’s not an All 4 One, a Boyz II Men, a BSB, an ‘N Sync or 98 Degrees song I didn’t don’t know every word to. When TRL went off the air with its star-studded finale in November of 2008, a part of the annoying-yet-lovable teenybopper inside of me died with it.
When Backstreet performed “I Want It That Way” at the finale, it was bittersweet. It’s a song I’ll always love, and often break out at reckless karaoke performances (there’s video out there if you look hard enough for it- what?)- but at the end of the day, the TRL Finale really did mark the end of an era, and for me, in 2008, when I had just started my first “Real Job”, it was the end of my carefree days as a kid, a college student, and a bartender… and the beginnings of being an adult.
RIP, Total Request Live. You were loved.

Oh god I LOVED Real World Las Vegas.
By the time TRL ended, I felt so detached from it. The show was great when I was a teenager, but as an adult, it wasn’t the “need to watch” of my afternoons. Regardless, still seemed like the end of an era.
P.S. Daria FTW.
I’m a loser because I miss Remote Control. One of the stupidest game shows BUT I KNEW THE ANSWERS AND FELT SMART!
I’ve recently gone on a Daria bender since the entire series was released on DVD. FINALLY. God, I love that show.
Daria rocks! I just got the complete series from The Mister as a gift.
I wasn’t supposed to watch MTV either, but it didn’t take us long to figure out that you could still view channels that were supposedly programmed out.
I *loved* the Real World. It’s just not the same to me anymore. I can’t remember which season was the last I watched religiously, New Orleans maybe?
I LOVE DARIA!!!!
I can’t believe I totally forgot about Daria. I LOVED that show.
i did an internship in NYC one summer in college and waited in times square for hours to get on a bus out to the hamptons for the their summer TRL show. at 19 my friend and i were the oldest people there, but Carson was way hotter up close. i still have my giveaway bag from that day with old mac makeup, glitter, and stale candy in my keepsake box of Important Items from my youth.
ahhh MTV. loves it.
I miss that show they had called “Trailer Fabulous.”
Remember that!?
I love Daria and my crush on Trent is more than a little disturbing.
TRL and BSB’s pretty much sum up my favorite moment of MTV history! i was in love! love your top 3. i’m also a fan!
This makes me feel old. I would have listed the release of the “Thriller” video, any airing of a ZZ Top video, and Adam Sandler’s appearances on that gameshow where everyone answered TV trivia from a LaZBoy recliner (what was that show?).
we didn’t have cable when I was a kid, except for that magical summer in 1994 when Colombia was in the World Cup and my uber-Baptist parents spliced cable from the neighbors so we could watch the games. Whenever my mom was out doing yardwork, I was glued to the TV watching MTV and other forbidden fruits. Counting Crows, Janet Jackson Lisa Loeb and a Meatloaf song (I think) were in heavy rotation.
Best. Summer. Ever. (until Colombia was knocked out of the Cup and they killed the soccer player….other than that though)
I was such a loser and had a Real World Las Vegas book….yeah, they made books about RW. I LOVED that season.
I adored BSB. I listened to them constantly and went to their concert. I rushed home from cross country practice so I could see them at number 1 on TRL. I mean, when were they not #1?
I like your moments. It brings me back to HS.
oh, daria. i was more of a hybrid between daria and jane, but that show speaks to my soul.
i took up with MTV in the late 1980s, when i had cable in my room and parents who were heavy sleepers. the first real world was the most captivating thing i’d ever seen… until RW3, the san francisco cast. i LOVE that judd and pam actually got married. that was the sweetest thing ever. i watched 120 minutes religiously every sunday night.
ok, i’m depressed now that all of these things happened so long ago…
omg DARIA how dare i forget!!!
and the RWLasVegas was the first RW i ever watched.we had jst gotten cable it had jst started showing on MTV EUROPE (which is the MTV you get in ole Africa) omg i used to stay up and watch tht and be ready to flip channels if i heard my parents coming cos you just never knew what was gonna happen
you hve jst brought back a whole lotta memories!
I have to agree with Daria. She’s one of the best things to happen from MTV! I was her for Halloween last year and no one knew who I was until I sang “La la la la la.”
I love Daria. I used to watch it with my Dad. Occasionally we download a few episodes from iTunes and relive our love for her.
August 1, 1981…. I was visiting my father. He had cable TV. I was flipping channels (I’d woken up REALLY early… or more likely, had been up all night watching movies on cable…because we didn’t HAVE cable at home, but my Dad was a tad less vigilant parent….)
So, when MTV hit the air… I was enthralled. And remember being up a full 24 hours or more, most of it in front of the TV mesmerized by the music videos.
So, yeah… I’m old… But have wonderful memories of MTV from “back in the old days…”
I also enjoyed Daria… mirrored my high school experience pretty well.
Who else mentioned Remote Control? LOVED that show!!!
Real World Boston – softy spot for it. Can’t help it.
Love this! I liked the older Real Worlds more than anything post-Vegas, but it’s still, I have to confess, one of my favorite shows.
Okay. I may or may not own the Vegas RW season on DVD and I may or may not really watch it and I may or may not be completely willing to send it to a better home with one of my fave blog friends…if said blog friend wished to have it
YES! I, as well just got the entire Daria series on DVD.
Who needs to enjoy summer weather???
Daria 4 eva!
RW Vegas, San Diego (with that girl Frankie) and Back to New York (The MIZ!) were BY FAR my favorites. I know the earlier seasons were the best but I was too young to watch them lol.
DARIA!! and OMG Beavis and Butthead?!
MTV was my shittt when I was in middle school lol. TRL and Say What?! Karaoke made up my daily routine. Remember the Spring Break week they had with the contests that Jerry Springer hosted? Or the show Singled Out?! There was also another show that I loved watching but I can’t think of the name but there was a judge and it put two EXs on trial and the jury decided who was at fault for the breakup. Ugh, I can’t think of the name but I LOVED IT!
I look at old school MTV in the same light that I look at old school Nickelodeon.
I LOOOOOVED RW Las Vegas! Excellent choice. I think that season helped me grow in so many ways
Daria! I loved Daria. I miss Daria. When you when can you bring Daria back? Serious.
WIN not when. whatever!
LOVED daria! And who doesn’t love Real World? Gotta say, my fav season was the first NOLA Real World back in 2000. (look it up. It’s not the first time RW is in NOLA!!)
Ah, TRL…..I remember it so fondly.
Boy Band Era was my time, as well.
fyi
cajones = drawers
cojones = balls
I know none of these TVs shows! I grew up on such entertaining shows such as Skippy (a show about a kangaroo that would save small children from falling down drains etc). I think I missed out on some shit.
I was obsessed with Daria and I identified myself so much with her!!! They even used to call me Daria during high school :S I look back and although Daria was cool as hell, I must have been a pretty odd kid…
Ahhh TRL, I would get so angry when you would only play a snippet of a music video haha. But I loved all the guests who came on
Love this little piece of MTV nostlagia
And I’ve been living under a rock blog-wise but I -FINALLY- voted for you and really hope you win!!!
Oh my gosh, I remember the days when I didn’t have to work or go to some sort of practice and got to come home and watch TRL after school. The boy band days were some of the best days, weren’t they?!
I may or may not have gotten all tingly in my nether regions from the Backstreet video… Now please excuse me…
Lol, I was the exact same way! My mum banned MTV until I was 16 or something ridiculous!
OMG this is the best. I so just went over to Netflix and added the whole Daria series to my queue. I LOVED Daria!
I am so old that I have a kid who used to watch Beavis and Butthead with me. She fondly remembers the neglect of when I used to say to her – “Please go play with matches or check out that new set of steak knives in the kitchen, okay, honey? Mommy has to watch Daria now.”
My own version of Sick Sad World.
oooh TRL, the best was when they premiered new videos. Like that time my mom came in when the Thong Song premiered. That went over well. #rachelfail
I wasn’t allowed to watch MTV as a kid either! I loved Daria when I could catch it on, though. And I tried to watch TRL every afternoon after school. I think Real Word: San Diego was my favorite.
I used to remember coming home from school and having a snack and watching TRL, hosted by Carson Daly. Those were the days.
And Daria? AMAZING
Daria was great! And it made me think of Beavis and Butthead too. Wade calls my sister Beavis b/c he says she laughs like him. It drives her crazy. I think it is hilarious.
Looove Daria. I wasn’t “allowed” to watch MTV either as a kid. Or Dirty Dancing. That’s what sleepovers are for
Oh man! I loved TRL!
i am SO writing a post about Trent. Wait. For. It.
Has anyone else heard that they’re bringing back Beavis and Butthead?? I’m sad to admit that i’m pretty excited about this!! haha
My favorite Real World was definitely Seattle. So close to home! And yet sooo crazy!
Great post! Loved RW Las Vegas! With the disclaimer that I’m old:
1. The 1st day the channel aired. I didn’t fully get it, but my 2 best girlfriends stayed home from the pool to watch it all. I headed home to watch it in the afternoon;
2. Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” performance at the 1st VMAs. Whether you loved her or hated her, you were riveted; and
3. Tie between Britney’s VMA performance of “Oops! I Did It Again,” where you knew she really wasn’t that innocent; RW SF – when Pedro died; and RW Seattle when Stephen slapped Irene.
Real World Las Vegas. Loved it! made me want to move to the top of the Palms =)
And the TRL Finale. I’m pretty sure I watched it. I also may or may not have been a huge BSB fan.
MTV was so much better when TRL existed. However, WHEN you are a twitter jockey for them, it will be 1000% better
Will be awesome to say that I know the first MTV twitter jockey ever!
I loved TRL too… I fell in love with in during the summer of 2006 so when it went off the air in 2008, I was pretty much devastated and screaming at the TV every day at 3 o’clock “What am I supposed to do with my 3-4 time slot NOW?”
Beavis and Butthead is coming back! I hope Daria makes appearances like she used to
Daria FTMFW. I used to watch & re-watch every single episode. and the musical episode? I still have every song memorized. LOVED THAT SHOW.
Oh you so nailed it! I loved all 3 and had nearly forgot about Daria! Great post! So hope you win this contest, you deserve it!
I did the same remote thing with late night “silk stalkings” when we got premium cable. My friends and I would watch soft porn and change the channel when we could hear my Mom coming downstairs. I think she clued in eventually and cancelled cable.
Real World Las Vegas was my favorite too! I couldn’t stand Trishelle though. She always had a pink nose. What’s up with that?
I’m pretending as though that BSB video didn’t just put a knot in my throat.
Oh, my eternal devotion to that boyband WILL NEVER END. I will be 90, crusty, senile and wearing diapers while blastin’ some damn BSB.
PS: when I saw ‘em @ Wolf Trap the other month, I scored 5th row at around 4pm. I got an “I Love You” in ASL from Brian [and completely flipped my shit] and then I threw my back out.
From dancing so hard.
At a Backstreet Boys concert.
I should stop talking.
