I Don’t Get (or *Get*) Cabin Fever.

by rachaelgking on February 12, 2010 · 102 comments

Today, I am at the office.

It is, thanks to snOMG, the first time since last Thursday.

All week, I’ve heard growing moans of despair as the District announced snow day after snow day.

To the moaners I say… What. The. Fuck. Is wrongwithyou???

Every night this week, B and I waited anxiously to be granted yet another day of heaven in our cocoon of cat, food, booze, not showering, and Netflix on demand. We rooted for the Impossibly Corny Newscasters as though they were announcing the lottery, and exploded with high fives and fist pumps every time the Federal Government’s roulette coin landed on “snow day – white.”

Every night, we were rewarded.

Until last night.

I know it was greedy. I know it was selfish. I know people out there were without power or internet or their sanity and I sympathize with them- I do.

But for me? This week was a gift from the ancient gods. Something so magical it would never have occurred to me to do, and therefore all the more special…

A ONE-WEEK STAYCATION.

Followed by a long weekend.

DC may know it as the Snowpocalypse of 2010… I will remember it as the week all my dreams came true.

Oh, and also the week we learned that Axe Murderer barks at squirrels when we’re gone all day. First Murray fetching, now this? I guess I was wrong when I told B he couldn’t turn the cats into dogs…

(Hopefully you can hear the audio- my work computer’s speaker isn’t powerful enough. But if you can’t, isn’t she preeeeeeeeeeeeeeetty?)

.

.

.

P.S. My lovely friend Stevie in Seattle’s brother is currently serving America the Beautiful in Iraq, and soon he will make a lucky woman his bride. Please click here to read their story on Stevie’s site and vote for him and his fiance to give them the wedding of their dreams!!!

A week trapped inside.

My family would dead within 3 hours.

Thank God for snowplows.

Hence why my cats are my ONLY children.

Axe murderer would enjoy a lesson from my dog in the backyard, where my dog would show him how to ‘kill and bury for later’ squirrels.

It’s an acquired skill, but one that’s useful the rest of your life.

On the bonus side, we never want for squirrel meat. It’s good for everybody.

Eh. I’d eat it.

Wow, axe murderer whimpers just like my dogs, that’s crazy. I may actually like this cat. Or not cause I’m still afraid of cats.

We got a snow day today. Texas people are wimps but I sure as hell ain’t complaining. I’m working on my mom to come pick me up and take me to the mall. She doesn’t even have to pick me up, just leave me there for the day!

You guys are so cute with your four inches. Try THIRTY four.

4 Millie February 12, 2010 at 10:37 am

I worked from home most of this week – and had one snow day on Wednesday. But I’m back at work and it def sucks.. considering the metro sucks and it took me two hours to get to work. It would have been better for me to stay at home and just work from there. At least we have a 3 day weekend… that’s the only consolation I have after coming in today.

That is NOT the kind of snow week I was talking about. That blows.

Snow.

Gettit?!

5 Skinny Dip February 12, 2010 at 10:52 am

I actually like sounds of your Snow-cation! Although I might get cabin fever, I think I’d also relish in a whole week to be totally lazy and watch cheesy movies to my hearts content…but, that would probably never happen in Toronto because Canadians are used to crazy weather & we have a bazillion snow ploughs. Snow is just like an after thought. Sigh. I can dream though!! ;)

Oh, I know. If I was still in Mass I don’t think we’d have gotten a single day off. Not one.

A week of snow days would be utterly amazing! Way to enjoy the situation.

It truly was magical.

7 Hope February 12, 2010 at 11:26 am

I am so jealous! We got half an inch of snow IF THAT. Although I did get a free half day out of it. So, I suppose that’s not so bad.

Still. One day week? Followed by a long weekend?

WANT.

I KNOW. And people are complaining!! I am dumbfounded!

8 DCPrincess February 12, 2010 at 11:39 am

The only reason I felt a little cabin feverish and made the Boy drive me to Starbucks IN THE BLIZZARD is because there are 4 other people in this house. And they are LOUD people.

True. My cats nibble my toes in the morning?

I admit, I did start to go a little bat ess crazy but thank the maker I had plenty o booze. And my cats have seizure like inaudible meows when the birds or squirrels tease them at the door.

I can only imagine what she’d do if we had a DOOR to the outside (rather than an apartment hallway).

Ahhhh my cat barks like that too!!! It sounds like he is smacking his lips and chirping but he only does it when he is super excited about seeing something kill-worthy out the window. What lovely animals!

It DOES sound like lip smacking! Our ferocious little hunters.

I wouldn’t say I was aching to get out and go to work, but I was sick of not being able to run errands and shit. I would much rather be at home than work on ANY day, snow or not.

Girl Cat is the SHIT.

She is bad ass, man.

14 Martina February 12, 2010 at 12:00 pm

My cat does the same thing all day long – but the barking is directed at people passing by (he’s not very bright).

I’m actually decently scared of the snow (considering I’m Canadian and grew up with 6 months of it every year) but we never get enough to warrant work being shut down.. or maybe we just have better coping methods for snow (Wanna see a Canadian freak out? Tell ‘em a hurricane is coming)

Also, I love that your xmas tree is still up…

I only got one snow day so I’m considering myself screwed out of a week of sheer non-showering bliss. Though I’d probably cave and shower pretty early on. I just roll that way.

You were totally screwed. And I actually did shower… but not nearly as often as common sense dictates.

Not to brag, but I totally have today off.

Ok..so that’s bragging. *ahem*

That video? Twenty kinds of amusing. One of mine’s been sittin’ in the basement just staring at the birds hiding under our deck. She doesn’t bark at them, but she’s been squeaking at us a whole lot. I doubt she’ll ever learn to meow properly.

And in other news, this is the first post I’ve read in, like, 2 weeks. I have SERIOUSLY got to kill my reader.

Uh.. and stop rambling…

Staycations are completely amazing. I found out the hard way after a horrible incident at Dulles Airport that forced me to cancel an overseas trip and be confronted with a week off of work with NOTHING to do. After that, I decided to schedule a staycation every year.

Also, I don’t understand the complainers either. Snow days are the BEST, and you got almost an entire week out of this deal. That’s cause for celebration, dammit!

Um yeah.. here in NC, (you know, RIGHT where you used to live apparently, working right next to where I used to work..) we got snow last week. And its all anyone can talk about, (complain about,) but I was totally happy with my 2 work delays in a row, and also laughing because I’m used to a giant shit ton of snow every yearin NY, so the 2 inches we got was a joke to me. But don’t worry… it closed school for a week. I was jealous of DC and VA this week. I wanted a week off from work. This place would have been paralyzed! Tell everyone to be quiet, cause snow days ROCK.

Two things, friend. One: I am in Central Jersey, where the snow has readed nearly two feet in height and TWO: I am a high school student, in one of the “best public schools in the country” according to Forbes magazine. So we, as the poor, unsuspecting students, are practically punished for snow days. We had two. Today I get to school, greeted by the overwhelming scowls of faculty and a good three days worth of homework. When asked why, dear god *why*, teachers respond with a snarky, “You had two days off” as though, damn us! Damn us for living! Damn us for making it snow! Us lazy neanderthals! God forbid a bunch of fifteen year olds get two days off! GOD! DAMN!

I think after a few days, I would get a bit stir crazy. I don’t like staying in the house for very long. Did you guys at least make a snowman?

78 Susan February 12, 2010 at 10:46 pm

I am so jealous of you guys. We were supposed to get a storm on Wed and it never came! Just a few flurries and a lot of wind.

1. That type of weather is unheard of in CA….and therefore, I am so jealous!!!

2. I have never seen/heard a cat do that before! I love Axe Murderer!

80 mar February 12, 2010 at 11:47 pm

i really enjoyed the call and response barking that happened around 1:20.

my cat at home does this too … except she sounds a little like a mini-machine gun when she barks.

I wish we had gotten that much! We got six inches and it didn’t even stick. But yet they still closed all the schools. Whoosies!

Your cat…is BARKING. Barking? That’s a cat I may be able to get on board with. If I ever end up with another cat, I will want all of B’s secrets.

Also, a week long staycation is one of my favorite things ever. And my snow day ROCKED.

I love snow days too! I could literally be stranded (as long as I have power and food) for weeks and be just fine. Can you do your snow dance or whatever magic next week? We’re supposed to get some snow then and I need you to pull through for me. I know you can do it!

Even when it snows in Glasgow, only schoolkids (and by default, teachers) get snow days. I can’t believe people were moaning about them!

that many snow days are certainly a gift from the gods! but i dunno if i could handle a long staycation with no internet or TV and be cheerful about staying in. even tho we’re on vacation we are stealing internet from someone else in the building, i just can’t stay away from it!

Hey at least you enjoyed it while it lasted! Honestly, I probably would be doing the same thing If I worked and/or went to school-Now if we get a snow day it’s like ‘Eh’ because I’m already living at home doing nothing. LOL

I’m off to vote for your friend! :D

My sister’s cat, Tonka, does that! He was barking at birds when he was still allowed in my parents’ basement when she came home. We were never lucky enough to get it on camera though. But it was pretty friggin’ hilarious.

I love the idea of your cocoon … I would love to join in (that sounds ridiculously creepy but it’s totally not meant to be *cough*). We barely had any snow so I’ve been jealous of the snOMG that’s taken over there. At least I have a week off from school this week? Hehe. Hope you’ve had a good weekend :)

OMG, preeeeeetty kitty.
When we lived in Alaska, we gave our dog a nickname. It sounds like Pib-tok-lok, which is the Inuit name for “cabin fever.” He was not able to go outside all day like other dogs in the neighborhood and he would get soooo crazy in the winter (which in Alaska is September thru March).
I do not mind being inside for a few days, but I reach a limit for sure. I did enjoy not having work or school last month, so I had a 5 day weekend. And since I work for government, we got paid. So I can’t complain too much about being trapped in my house. :)

93 Lucy February 14, 2010 at 9:08 pm

I hope you enjoyed your staycation but yeah, you had to go back to the real world eventually and actually trudge through the snow, yuck!

Drop by my blog for a special Valentine’s Day treat!

Thank GOD someone wrote a post like this. Because, I’m not gonna lie, all the DC blogs I was reading about wanting to go back to work and missing civilization and all that crap? I kept thinking, “WTF, kids?!?! Enjoy the unplanned time off while you can! Live it up! Relax! Enjoy!!!” Glad to know you and B did just that, my dear. :)

95 Megan February 15, 2010 at 10:41 am

My sentiments exactly. They announced that we had to WFH on Thursday and I was PISSED. Someone actually told me that they “missed going to work”…*silence*….*more silence* I miss NOT ONE THING about going to work. What is wrong with these people. Back to work tomorrow, unless this snow we are supposed to get tonight makes all of my dreams come true – another 4-day (or less) work week.

96 MJ February 15, 2010 at 1:13 pm

I’m with you–I’ll take a week off work for a few hours of grueling shoveling any day. And, not being able to move my car for a week is like a dream to me. Suck it suburbia–cities rule!

97 Brittney February 15, 2010 at 2:09 pm

RIGHT!?!? I went to work all week, despite snow, because I don’t have a laptop. Boo for me. But they suggested on our dial in that if you DID, work from home. Yet I saw COUNTLESS people at work who had the ability to not come in and they were super chatty about how annoying it was to maybe miss a smidge of work due to the snow.

ARE. YOU. EFFIN. NUTS.

They’re right. Waking late, working from home in pajamas all day with bad tv shows on repeat in the background? That sounds AWFUL. Sarcasm, sarcasm. My only guess is they hate their home lives, lol. Because why else would you ever, ever, EVER leave for work if you didn’t have to?

My boy cat Fado does something similar when he sees birds – he chirps and copies them and his face gets twitchy. My girl cat Zoey used to fetch. It was so cute!

My cat does the same thing! There are three big trees out our living room window and she squeaks and kinda sounds like a dolphin. Hilarious and amazing!

She also fetches! She likes paintbrushes and elastic headbands (like big elastics…) You can fling them across the floor and she loves it!

PS – I just found your blog and so far I love it. :-D
