Let's Get Our Kvetch On! Blogging Style…

in BEATDOWN bitches, bitches, blogs, facebook might just be the devil, twitterwhore

(Yeah, I can say that. I went to Brandeis for a year, so I’m basically an honorary Jew.)

Since I’ve started experimenting with blogger layouts, I’ve thought a lot about what makes a blog more attractive. And I’m not talking high heels and a short skirt- too obvious. I mean the big and little things that make us happy we stumbled onto a page, and even happier to stay. The aesthetics, if you will.

Now, obviously content is, ultimately, the most important thing. It doesn’t matter how pretty your corner of the innerwebs is if your writing is uninteresting and/or unrelatable. But all too frequently, I will trip over a blog that I might have liked, that I might have added to my reader… if only I could freaking stand to READ it.

So after thinking for a while about WHICH things drive me batty, personally, here’s what I came up with… (again, we’re thinking presentation, not content here, darlings).

My Biggest Blogging Pet Peeves

  • If your text is unreadable on the background. We’re all doing this for free (or for 13 cents a day from Google ads). I ain’t gonna kill myself to read it, dear.
  • If I click on your profile and there are 9 blogs listed as “yours”. I don’t want to play multiple choice, I just want to pay my respects (if you commented here) and see what you’re up to.
  • Blatantly asking me to pimp you out. Dude, that’s just not common courtesy.
  • Itty-bitty teeny weeny text, and please to put spaces between your paragraphs. We’re getting old, and I read a LOT of shiz on this monitor… Make it easy, please and thank you.
  • MUSIC THAT PLAYS AUTOMATICALLY. This not only scares the bejeezus out of me, it would get me strange looks at work if I ever left my sound on. The office is awkward enough as it is. If I care to explore your musical taste, I will click ‘play’.
  • Flashing or, god forbid, POP UP advertisements. Honestly, you could not scare me away any faster.
  • People who never, ever, EVER respond to a single comment… (or at least visit a regular commenter’s blog to say hey). I realize I might be a little ridiculous in responding to every single one, but I can’t help it. If you take enough time to read my drivel and leave your two cents, the least I can do is respond to you, or head over to your corner and see what you’re up to. As Nicopolitan was kind enough to say in a 20SB Blogger discussion, I try really, really hard to make sure this place is a two-way conversation, and that you all know how much I value and appreciate you taking the time to visit.

Phew! So that’s MY beef, y’all. After getting all that out, I was curious what you all thought, too… So I took it to the streets, aka the Tweet and the Facebook. This is very important research, peoples!

The Question: What are your biggest blog pet peeves that keep you from reading? I.e. font, colorings, strange odors, etc.

(Ed. note: These are somewhat paraphrased for brevity, but I believe I kept your points intact.)

On the Gchat:

Caviandra: Maxie and I were talking about this the other day- unreadable fonts! Oh, and run on sentences. And lots of LOLZ and “!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” (Amen. Lolz!)

Lemmonex: hmm… useless comments. and shitty layout, or if it’s complex and there’s too much going on. give me something to focus on. you dont need 7 fonts. (Useless comments are so hard to respond to, too. Blah.)

From the Twatter:

tracyneproski: @ LivitLuvit: I hate it when people use “u” “r” “2″ etc. in place of words (but only when they do it un-ironically) (Agreed! Ironically is TOTALLY fine, though, of course.)

loveshan: @LivitLuvit: when people complain about losing followers, begging for comments, etc. i feel like blogging should be about creating bonds, not raising numbers (Absolutely. We all peek at our stats, etc… but don’t TALK about it. Tacky much?)

kolys: @LivitLuvit: Bad spelling/grammar is the one thing which will keep me from reading a blog post. I can deal with anything else. (I don’t mind a simple “your” and “you’re” mix up, but if I have to figure out what you’re (ha!) trying to say, forget it.)

thienkim: @LivitLuvit: my blog pet peeve is music that plays automatically. thank goodness for my google reader (This drives me INSANE. And scares the crapouttame.)

gingermandy: @LivitLuvit: my BIGGEST pet peeve is when people only put partial posts in their feed. and when their text isn’t on a solid background. (I’m sorry, I’m sorry! No partial posts again, I promise!)

whateverkaty: @LivitLuvit: Music playing automatically! But I keep my speakers off to combat that problem. (Me too- at work. But at home? Gets me every time. Gah!)

courtincolorado: @LivitLuvit: really long posts…i have a short attention span (Don’t we all… we are Gen-X and Yers, after all.)

makarlin: @LivitLuvit: I stopped reading one because it would play Daft Punk when it opened. Oh dear god was it annoying. (I don’t know what that is, and I don’t think I want to.)

emvandee: @LivitLuvit: Spelling errors. Grammatical errors, to a lesser extent. But I’ll give up if the spelling is generally abhorrent. (I love the word abhorrent. And YES.)

teasingdiverse: @LivitLuvit: music that automatically plays that you CAN’T turn off. Lots of flashing, blinking lights. It’s a blog, not Vegas! (ESPECIALLY ADS that do this! So offensive.)

whatagrandworld: @LivitLuvit: Really, excessively long posts that are more ramblings then anything else. That and stupid colors that make it unreadable. (“Stupid colors” – I love it.)

violetsworld: @livitluvit: strange odors for sure but bad grammar makes it 1st on the list (You love my odor. Admit it.)

aritzagoddess: @LivitLuvit: no pictures ! I love pictures, plus I’m kinda lazy to read a whole paragraph without any visual aid. (Duly noted.)

Flower

babykaycee: @LivitLuvit: Neon colored text, walls of text, lack of pictures = no read. (Neon should not happen… ever.)

From the Book:

WickedCourtni: Blog snobs: Bloggers who think that they are too good to comment to your comment, but comment on their blog clique minions all around your comment. (That would hurt my heart. This happens?)

Organic Meatbag: I echo Courtni’s sentiments…oh, and any blog that talks about Jesus in every fucking post… but then again, bloggers that are bible thumpers usually don’t visit mine… (Mine either, dear!)

ClaireMontgomeryMD: if every post is LONG, font, color, layout, BORING, bloggers who are obviously trying to get hits and followers or be the next ‘big thing’ . . . shall i go on? i’m as picky over the blogs i read (or don’t) as the men i date (or don’t) strange odors do not bother me though – especially on your blog. (I knew it. It’s “Poop” by Calvin Klein.)

PQ: What Courtni said. (She’s a smart cookie.)

and for our grand finale…

verybadcat: my pet peeves are few- truncated posts in RSS (which my own husband does despite my heated protests), hard to read font, page is too busy. other than that, i would say you’re looking at it backwards. i read who i read because i’m drawn to read. you’re a great example. how could i *not* read you? you’re effin hilarious.
there’s the comment issue too. i don’t read the big guys anymore. my time is limited, and i would rather read someone who reads me, who i’m actually *interacting* with a little, as opposed to lining up to be the 500th comment on a post. (I love you.)

So take heed, my lovelies. I think this is a pretty comprehensive guide to all things that make your interwebby peers run screaming from a blog, for your consideration.

I’ll take my public servant medal now.

(Oh, this was just me bitching? Well, I’ll take a goddamn medal for that too, thankyouverymuch.)

I agree with everyone here. The automatic music has to be the worst, since it makes me feel like I've stumbled onto a MySpace page. I'm also with you on not bothering with the heavy-hitters… like Dooce. Sorry, I'm sure it's great, but I'm already over it.

One layout I love is Deutlich's. It's pretty, easy to read, and she posts about the BSB a lot.

2 Sarah June 10, 2009 at 1:36 pm

I just hate hate the damn music…. hello, I have an iPod… I can listen to music if I want to! My own, that is.

3 Lemmonex June 10, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Hate the music as well.

I really do hate "u", "2", "r", etc. It makes people sound uneducated. I know blogs are informal and god knows I have typos ALL THE TIME, but why are people so hell bent on sounding like they barely graduated from middle school.

Also, sorry my love LiLu, but I hate LOLSpeak.

4 ria June 10, 2009 at 1:41 pm

a-fucking-men! to all of those.

happy hump day :)

5 brookem June 10, 2009 at 1:41 pm

ha right on sister. the music thing really gets me. also, colors and fonts and styles that just make my head hurt. seriously, one blog ive read, though i like the content, makes me feel like poking my eyes out it's so LOUD and bright with colors!

6 Big Money Tony June 10, 2009 at 1:42 pm

Well put. For me, writing for the sake of writing and not making it entertaining. That's why despite certain bloggers taking time off is a good thing. Sure I'll miss their daily wit, etc, but if they feel they can not produce good content, take time off to focus and clear the head.

I tried writing daily, but I found it to be hard to do so while being informative and/or entertaining. I can put shit up, but I think I'll lose readers faster that way. Google reader, RSS & Twitter feeds help keep track of those who only occasionally blog.

7 Kate June 10, 2009 at 1:43 pm

Black background with colored text. Nope. Not doing it. But I personally think my blog is perfect in all ways. Hahahaha!

8 SoMi's Nilsa June 10, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Oh, how I love this post! I think my top 3 biggest pet peeves are:
1) Print on anything but white background
2) Partial posts in feed reader
3) Multiple posts in one day

9 Maxie June 10, 2009 at 1:46 pm

PARTIAL FEEDS

WEIRD FONTS

Those two freakin KILL me.

10 Courtney June 10, 2009 at 1:47 pm

Favorite:

That you added a pretty flower picture just for aritzagoddess'! You're too sweet.

11 Katie June 10, 2009 at 1:49 pm

I have to agree with the automatic music, I don't like that at all. I also have to agree with the hard to read fonts!

12 Mb June 10, 2009 at 1:50 pm

in 100% agreement about the music and small text. i immediately have to leave the scene.

13 ifihadtopickfive June 10, 2009 at 1:50 pm

one trick pony’s: the people who write about the SAME thing over and over and over because it either gets them a lot of hits (weddings) or they can't think of anything else constructive to say (their wedding)

14 Deutlich June 10, 2009 at 1:50 pm

begging for comments and lack of full feed is a sure-fire way to get me to run

quick

15 Penny June 10, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Ok,let's see – my pet peeves.

1.Very long,rambling posts – I don't need to know every.single.detail of your life.

2.Lots of spelling errors – If you are English speaking, and it's your first language, there's no excuse to be a bad speller. It's called SPELLCHECK,by the way.

3.When people make excuses for why they haven't been blogging in a while – don't make excuses, just start blogging again.

4.Bloggers who aren't naturally funny, then try too hard to actually be funny – if you know you're not really all that funny, put the focus on something else in your blog, and not so much the humor.

Well,I've got more, but I probably pissed a lot of people off with my comment being too long,so I'll leave it there.

16 Megan June 10, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Any and all of the "lolspeak" gets annoying; begging for followers and comments constantly; horrible spelling; not commenting back at least once in a while (I know we're all busy, but a hey here and there is always nice).

17 Lil' Woman June 10, 2009 at 1:54 pm

I have to agree with what everyone else is saying but esp. black backgrounds. I suddenly feel depressed when I open a blog up that is in all black.

18 Ronnica June 10, 2009 at 1:54 pm

Excessive grammar/spelling mistakes and long paragraphs are on the top of my list. I'll agree with a few others, too…show me your whole post in your feed, or I won't click over (counter-intuitive, yes?).

19 Debbi June 10, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Um, is it overly snobby of me to say that I dislike ALL the above? (music…grr. Grade-2 typos…yuck) I also hate giveaways that require you to link/follow, etc. That's not a giveaway, it's a bribe.

My blog is boring, but I'd LIKE to think it's readable.

and, for all you others, I'll keep my Jesus talk down to a minimum if you follow me and link to my blog. And watch out for the Daft Punk music (hahah, Lilu, you REALLY don't know who that is?). Enjoy.

(and my blog does NOT smell like Poop by Calvin Klein. :( )

20 Matt June 10, 2009 at 1:58 pm

I agree with pretty much every statement that was made.

and black backgrounds with white text? Gives me headaches.

21 lovelila June 10, 2009 at 1:59 pm

I was reading all of these hoping I didn't commit any blogging crimes, haha! I think I passed, whoo!

Anyway, the whole "playing music automatically" thing scares the crap out of me, too. I always ended up frantically scrolling the page thinking, "Where the fuck is that music coming from?! I…must…destroy." I mean, I'll still read the blog, but like someone else said, Google Reader comes in handy for that. Phew!

22 JM June 10, 2009 at 1:59 pm

my biggest blog pet peeve…. wait for it….. you ready? When people use their blogs to tell everybody EVERTHING that they EVER get up to and their posts looks a little something like this….
(today, I ate some breakfast, took a shit, went to the store, talked to sally on the phone, blah blah blah blog blah blog BLAH blog BLAH) LAME! spice it up a bit, and leave the boring shit OUT! Leave it out! nobody gives a flying fuck about your bowels. (People also use facebook and twitter for this too, as shown by the lovely video of twitter WHORE!) whew! I'm wound up now, I'm pretty sure I could write a whole book about blog pet peeves. If I think of another one, will let u know!

23 Ashley June 10, 2009 at 1:59 pm

Music and anything that pops up. Keep it simple!

24 [F]oxymoron June 10, 2009 at 2:00 pm

#1 – Partial Feeds – I'll comment if I like it AND can read it

#2 – Dude, don't apologize for a blogger break, or a planned blogger break. Lame.

#3 – Every once in a while do something new, change your tone, try writing from a different perspective.

#4 – Comments rock. But you know what's better? Bloggers who individually respond to comments.

25 lovelila June 10, 2009 at 2:01 pm

Oh, and after seeing that forum topic on 20SB about commenting on your comments, I actually started commenting back a lot more! Though I'm not a new blogger, I was definitely new to "blogger etiquette," haha! I didn't think people would come back and read it! Surprise, surprise, now I know!

26 Lauren June 10, 2009 at 2:01 pm

This was a good post to read, (well, all your posts are fantastic to read ) but since I'm new to the blog world, its good to know this info. I don't have a blog of my own, but my fav blog's to read list is growing quite rapidly (including yours of course!)

27 Serena June 10, 2009 at 2:02 pm

I have to echo you – crappy layout/stupid ass font colours (though a bit of variety is always good), music that you can't turn off and lazy-ass spelling; 'u' and '2' are for cell phones only people!

28 Logical Libby June 10, 2009 at 2:02 pm

I hate the WEirD typing or people who type all in lower case or caps.

Also, people who use annoying pet names for their husbands every time they refer to them.

And my test if white on a blue background, but I like to think it's readable…

29 JM June 10, 2009 at 2:03 pm

I thought of another one! Girls that use blogs to tell about their weight loss/ eating habits/ food obsessions/ problems. AHHHHHHHHHHH…. there's a place for that, it's called weight watchers…. leave that shit OFF the interwebs….go find some whiny women who care about your issues, cause I sure as hell don't want to read about them!!!

30 Aritza, Goddess of .. June 10, 2009 at 2:04 pm

Haha, totally true. The music / noise that plays automatically is annoying .. and spelling mistakes.

Thanks for the picture, made that long post go down easier, j/k. I luv your stuff :)

31 inkpuddle June 10, 2009 at 2:05 pm

I am so guilty of the long, rambling pointlessness, and to some extent the useless commenting (because "oooh-ooh, I relate to this!" is just pathetic). But at least I have the picture thing down (snerk, snerk).

I agree with the automatic music and the comment snobbery though; I stopped reading quite a few blogs for those two reasons. (I like "real" bloggers who interact at least now and again, not some Wizard of Blog behind a magic curtain).

32 JM June 10, 2009 at 2:07 pm

This post has left me a little bit paranoid about my blog though…. I have a black background and grey text. I thought it was aesthetically pleasing, but if it gives people headaches, I will change it. Is it bad? annoying? wrong? :)

33 Lexilooo June 10, 2009 at 2:08 pm

I posted somewhat recently about comments. I never comment back right on my blog post, because I never really know if people go back for the followup! I often email them, if their email shows up on the comment (some do this, some don't)!

34 Organic Meatbag June 10, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Thanks for the shout-out, lady-person! Yes, music on blogs pisses me off too, and it's never even cool music…it's always some jack-ass douchebag shit that you might hear on "The Hills" or another such vehicle of repulsion…
I give you mucho credit for answering each and every person that posts here too…you are a good egg…

35 lustyreader June 10, 2009 at 2:19 pm

i love this post topic (as per usual with you) and DEF agree the most with music that plays automatically and i have to race and scroll maniacally down to find where to turn it off!

my office speakers are pretty quiet so sometimes the music sorta sneaks up on me and i'm not quite sure if im going crazy and hearing things or not. i feel like joey in frends when he's explaining as an actor how to look like you're thinking hard, just make a face like you're trying to smell a fart.

that's the face i have on when i'm trying to figure out if there is random music playing.

36 shine June 10, 2009 at 2:22 pm

To me, different colored text = link. I really really really hate having to mouse over every differently colored word to see if it's something I need to click. I'm too old for that shit.

I've never stumbled upon a blog with music that plays automatically, but I did accidentally blast a '60s McD's commercial at my desk once. Oops. I thought auto-playing music only happened on Myspace and that's why we all stopped using it.

I've made my feelings about grammar and spelling abundantly clear.

After reading all these complaints, I'm thinking…my blog needs more MS Paint, yes?

37 Organic Meatbag June 10, 2009 at 2:23 pm

Oh, and let's not forget possibly my top pet peeve: people that only post a picture or a video with no commentary or exposition whatsoever… that is lazy and douchey to the highest extreme…that's what MySpace is for…lazy assholes that have no capacity for thought or reasoning…

38 LBluca77 June 10, 2009 at 2:23 pm

I hate when someone has a bunch of different blogs and I have to figure out which one, seriously I don't have that kind of time.

I am guilty of not commenting on comments and I do feel bad about it. I used to all the time then work got very strict with internet use and sometimes I don't have time to do it at home.

But I promise to do better, I don't want you to bust out a can of whoop ass on me. Wait….did I really just say whoop ass!

39 laurwilk June 10, 2009 at 2:26 pm

Hmm…I agree with everyone else but music especially. I mean, it's obvious that most of us are sitting here at work NOT working. I don't need a stranger's music blaring out of my speakers startling everyone in the office and clearly putting a bullseye on my ass.

But, I can't really judge. Because I never even blog anymore. Wa waaa.

40 Shop Girl* June 10, 2009 at 2:35 pm

AMEN.

I somehow missed that Tweet… I loathe music players–if you really want me to hear a song, post a YouTube video and LET ME CHOOSE TO LISTEN.

I also hate those that beg for comments.. if you really want people to comment, post material that is thought provoking and interesting, no?

41 cavy June 10, 2009 at 2:36 pm

i used to have a music player on mine, and had totally forgotten about it until one day when my speakers were on and i screamed like a hungry newborn. never again.

and at this point i might as well legally change my name to caviandra.

42 moooooog35 June 10, 2009 at 2:40 pm

SO happy to read nothing about posting videos of your boss' testicles.

Dodged a bullet there.

43 Marie June 10, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Not a fan of the automatic music playing either. Plus can't stand flashing ads, sparkles, multiple colors and so on.

I agree with Lemmonex, it's hard to comment back to those comments that are well useless. (although I am one of those bloggers who don't always reply back to comments left on my blog – really just don't always have the time).

44 floreta June 10, 2009 at 2:42 pm

automatic music is my pet peeve. i don't like being forced to listen to other people's music tastes. i'm also usually listening to my own. i'll take your advice on tiny font..

45 Dr Zibbs June 10, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Mine are:

- The multiple blogs in one profile. At least capitalize the main one.

- I agree with the people that don't comment. I've commented on every blogger that's left a comment or becomes a follower.

- As for bloggers asking me to mention them I agree. Unless you're like me and you – you know – superstar status. Then it's OK.

And I am now tweeting this important post.

46 Beth June 10, 2009 at 2:46 pm

I have to agree about the music. Even though I see the box on the page, I still jump. I also hate those that whine about not getting comments. I am more compelled to leave a comment to tell them to stop whining than to actually say something nice.

I don't read Jesus blogs–although the occasional mention is just fine. Or blogs of parents documenting their terminal child's treatments, procedures and the like. Yeah, it's heartbreaking but I just can't follow them and have a normal day.

But, what I've seen some of lately in my own blog is spammers. They post a comment with a link back to their own blog just to get traffic to whatever they are selling–my last two were coffee and jewelry sellers. I delete those comments.

I also hate people that leave really long comments. You just want to say "get your own damn blog!".

47 KrisAKAJaney June 10, 2009 at 2:48 pm

LiLu, it's like you're a modern, hot, and much more hysterical version of an Internet Miss Manners. And you don't even have a gray old-timey hair do!!!!

48 Eric June 10, 2009 at 2:50 pm

Auto music is indeed the work of the devil, a devil that is more sinister and evil than the regular devil.

49 JFo June 10, 2009 at 2:52 pm

I haven't stumbled across many (if any blogs) with automatic music, but that would annoy the ish out of me. Maybe it's not coincidence I haven't found any of those…

Numero uno pet peeve is harsh colors combined with flashing graphics. It makes me feel like I'm watching one of those seizure-inducing Japanese cartoons.

50 Jerrod June 10, 2009 at 2:58 pm

anyone that individually responds to all comments… even in shifts… has me for life.

51 JM June 10, 2009 at 2:59 pm

I have to agree with organic meatbag about the jesus blogs. I hope I don't get sucked into the depths of hell for saying this… but there's a place for that…. church. and I don't really want to read about it on some happy clappy blog. uhoh… knock on wood, I'm still here.

52 Just Playing Pretend June 10, 2009 at 3:01 pm

I pulled up my blog after reading this just to make sure it passes the Lilu test.

Then I remembered that I frequently fail tests and I didn't want to risk it. So I'm just walking away and pretending I'm still awesome.

Oh and by the way, you are the queen of comment reciprocation. I even have a crown for you. So wear it proudly.

53 The Northerner June 10, 2009 at 3:03 pm

I hate blog snobs! There is one circle of bloggers that drives me insane. High school all over again!

54 miss. chief June 10, 2009 at 3:05 pm

too funny. i write these type of posts all the time. "why i hate your blog". haha. i think you covered most of them here.

55 Bird Shit and Baby Caca June 10, 2009 at 3:05 pm

I don't mind the music because I never have my volume on, I don't mind if people don't comment back cause I understand there and a shit load of blogs out there and I am just a little (spectacular) part of the blog world, but what really gets to me and it's no fault to anyone younger than me…but the 20 something blogger button. It's just in my face reminding me that in less than a month I will no longer be a part of the 20's club and will be 30. (of couse I am just kidding…sort of LOL)

56 alexa - cleveland's a plum June 10, 2009 at 3:06 pm

i have a two friends that went to brandeis!

my biggest annoyance is the lack of page breaks in the content. nothing turns me off more to a post than a huge block of copy. i won't read.

57 WendyB June 10, 2009 at 3:07 pm
58 emvandee June 10, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Eek. I'm guilty of the long paragraphs/long post thing. Whatevs. At least my spelling is almost always beyond reproach.

I AM okay, however, when awesome new words are made up. I read "Jesusaurus" as an exclamation on iamlemish (and have appropriated it for my own personal use), and The Bloggess does it all the time. In general, if you make up a word, you get to make up the spelling, and then I have no peeve. So, I guess, be creative?

59 Miss Tricky June 10, 2009 at 3:10 pm

I'm in agreement here as well….though I have to admit that part of me shriveled up and died while crying "oh god my paragraphs are too long".

Is it wrong that I don't always comment? I'm a die hard Dooce fan and have been for the last 4 years…never once felt inspired to comment. blog fail?

60 notthelifeiordered June 10, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Partial feeds. Horrible grammar and constant abbreviations (I WILL NOT read if that is the case). Using all CAPS, or no caps at all (although I am queen of not capitalizing my "i"'s.). And one that kind of annoys me, when commenting on blogger and then finding out they don't accept openID.

Excellent compilation :) I'm absolutely horrible at responding to comments. I really try but somedays i'm just too busy.

61 tobwot June 10, 2009 at 3:11 pm

I have to admit that I've been guilty of a couple of these things in the past.

Goodness knows I do have a fondness for the sound of my own voice (or typing) and am prone to long posts at times.

62 Brandy June 10, 2009 at 3:12 pm

I agree with most of this (I HATE, HATE, HATE the auto music…) but I have been known to be an offender of…

-talking numbers; look when I jump from 40 to 90 followers I wanna brag about it. Cause I'm an egomaniac and it makes me happy. As do…

-comments, so sometimes I beg. Not often though.

-I've also been known to use a neon color here & there but I have a dark background so hopefully it's not too annoying.

Otherwise, I'm a good little blogger that answers my comments – even the lame ones.

63 Elizabeth June 10, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Wow! So many of us hate that automatic music. Why do people persist? Constant pessimism galls me too. I know they're personal blogs for a reason, and you can write whatever you want, but do you really want to look back in a few years and be like, 'whoa, I was a morose MFer?' Didn't think so!

64 imgonnabreakyourheart June 10, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Busted. I guess I need to start commenting on comments.

And I will also stop blogging about how you are all going to hell because you use the Baby Jesus' name in vein and you need to accept the big JC into your life and your blog. God invented poop and pee and vaginas, but he didn't invent the interwebs (that was Al Gore) so keep it clean and heavenly (which means most of us need to stop writing). Burn, baby, burn. Amen.

65 Katy June 10, 2009 at 3:16 pm

I am not alone in my hatred of auto-music, COOL!

I also don't like super busy looking blogs with bells and whistles all over the place. (Hence the plain jane no frills blog of mine that will never ever get fancied up.)

But I did forget to mention one thing for your poll, I love love love when the comment box is a separate little pop up box rather than reloading the whole blog post again with the comments. Especially for fancy blogs with lots of background stuff that takes forever (ok, 3-5 seconds, I'm impatient) to load.

And I am now not a turd-monkey!

66 Julie Q June 10, 2009 at 3:16 pm

eeek i wanted to share with you my thoughts so badly on twitter yesterday but the 140 wouldn't cut it. a former fav has turned into such a whiny little annoying brat lately that i can no longer read it. Can't stand the PC blogworld though cos i'd love to just remove her from the blogroll. hahaha i've waited forever to get that off my chest. and… end scene.

there's a difference between bitching when its funny and entertaining, and just being depressing and annoying and knocking down people who worked at ann taylor loft as a part time job in college (c'mon people have had worse part time jobs).

i LOVED this post :) TRUE BLOOD on Sunday!!! we should live tweet (except i still have to reorder HBO before then)

67 Tonya June 10, 2009 at 3:17 pm

I've decided I'm stealing your line "scared the crapouttame" next time something does indeed, scare the crap out of me! I love reading your blog, LiLu!

68 Alice June 10, 2009 at 3:21 pm

i've done a number of these in my sordid blogging past ;-) used to have a black background on my blog, most egregiously.

i never had music though. HATE HATE auto-play music.

i also don't comment back to ppl in the comments, because i personally almost never go back to a post i've already read and commented on to see if the blog owner has replied back to me… i can't keep up w/my reader as it is, i just can't revisit the same post multiple times and still get to new ones. stupid work.

69 Kristin June 10, 2009 at 3:23 pm

God I completely agree on the blog snobs. I cannot stand people who won't comment on my blog, respond to a comment, follow me on Twitter…but have plenty of time to talk to a select group of other "big-wigs." We're all busy, so it's not the time issue.

I agree with whoever said they dont read the big ones anymore because they would rather read those that they can "communicate" with. Completely.100%. Agreed.

70 Rebel Mel June 10, 2009 at 3:23 pm

Sometimes I worry that my blog has annoying colors. I was once told that after reading a long post of mine, a reader saw little lines for a few minutes (where the text was – duh) and that has made me apprehensive ever since. I purposely made my colors match my banner, and I want to change both, but I havent had the time or patience to create a new layout in a long, long time.

I also worry if everything is centered or whatnot. The worst thing ever is when you have to scroll to the side on someones blog or (myspace,) just to read their paragraph/post/see the whole picture. It makes me think these people have never looked at their own blog! I worry about this a lot because I use a netbook, so I can't tell if things just look peachy on my end and are a royal mess on everyone who has a normal computer's screen.

71 Dmbosstone June 10, 2009 at 3:24 pm

A lot of these comments are about readability and -I fully agree with them. My biggest pet peeve however is blog snobs. Life is cliquey: online and IRL.

72 DocE June 10, 2009 at 3:24 pm

This was a good post and honestly, some of these things I didn't know when I started blogging and I wish I could have known sooner. Luckily a couple other bloggers modeled for me proper etiquette, or I would be a total boar/bore! Anyway, and I have to agree on the automatic music, scares the crap out of me every. single. time.

73 blissfullyme June 10, 2009 at 3:26 pm

Holy Crapoly! I just noticed your countdown to True Blood Season 2! Just when I thought I couldn't love you more…you rock, sister!

Have you read the books?!

P.S. Sorry for the totally unrelated-to-this-post comment.

74 The Wife in Stilettos June 10, 2009 at 3:26 pm

i agree with you. i think barely readable text is a total turn-off.

music? not that i hate them… but if the blogpage crawls because the music doesn't load, i close it.

75 Andhari June 10, 2009 at 3:27 pm

I can compromise with automatic music.

But definitely no to unreadable fonts, bright fonts over dark background. Those just annoy me to no end.

Oh and where the posts are all about a boyfriend or a girlfriend, or a kid. Everyday just how adorable my bf.gf/kid is, I'll just never go back.

76 nothingfancy1 June 10, 2009 at 3:28 pm

Oh boy! I'm right there with you, LiLu. Another peeve of mine . . . and i'm going to sound like a prick. . . but if I go to someone's blog and they write about "saving" me – etc. I don't need to be "saved". Well, maybe, but I don't need to read about it on a random blog.

Lilu – Thanks for taking time to read my junk over at my place. I'm finally back into the swing – so you'll be seeing more of me here. Looking forward to the TMI Thursday installment!

77 f.B June 10, 2009 at 3:32 pm

a content thing: posts that pretend i'm not reading them. if it's written in a voice that doesn't even care if i've stopped by…

style: a lack of focus. the blog should feature the content first and foremost. too often, i feel like Indiana Jones searching for the lost ark when i'm trying to sift through all the madness on a page.

78 Stephanie June 10, 2009 at 3:33 pm

I completely agree with everything in this post.

A big pet peeve of mine as a blogger is trying to respond to comments. Blogger is not very helpful to this and most comments come from a norepy@blogspot.com or something. Then trying to search someone's page for a nonexistent email address (put it somewhere please!) and then ending up commenting on a post in reply to a question that isn't relevant to the post at all. I hate doing that, but sometimes it's impossible to find an email address.

79 Leah June 10, 2009 at 3:36 pm

One thing that has been buggin' me lately is bloggers (or any individuals) who describe themselves as "just." "I'm just a girl form Louisiana" "I'm just a 20 something blogger."
I don't believe that ANYONE in the blogosphere is "just" anything, and it seems to me that when people describe themselves as "just" anything it is self-diminishing. If you thought you were "just" a girl/boy from the mountains/Chicago/Africa, you probably wouldn't be blogging about your life and having a reader-base.
Good post, some of which I am guilty of. I will change some of my habits for the better :)

80 Miss Rosa June 10, 2009 at 3:38 pm

Things that bother me include bad grammar, incorrect spellings, and posts that are all over the place (they don't flow, there's no connecting thoughts).

81 Rebel Mel June 10, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Oh, and I totally have three blogs. Sorry. Actually, I secretly have five, but two of them are so far from personal that no one I know has ever even seen them!

I think you like it though, at least there is a reason for my three… and at least they are properly labeled!

82 Holly Golightly June 10, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Now I'm all self-conscious about my blog layout. Eek. I promise, it's just because I have no idea how to design crap using HTML and I don't have photoshop. I really do have good taste!

Oh, and ditto to the music. And not commenting back to your commenters. Yep, I used the same word as a verm and a noun and you all liked it.

83 headbitingprincess June 10, 2009 at 3:43 pm

I am totally a faulty non commenter on your page ( becuz i always figured since you get like 973.plus one comments I didn't want to bog you down with a lame comment from gay me) when you could be using your time wisely such as for you to create a cracker me up new blog ! OMGosh I just broke rule # 5 and rambled .. fock !!!!!
please don't ban me !!!
=D

84 Soni June 10, 2009 at 3:45 pm

nice list….wts ur comment on the layout of my blog….ny suggestions??

85 Falling Up June 10, 2009 at 3:49 pm

I'd have to say the music that plays automatically and unreadable writing be it from the font or the color or background.

I'm a daily visitor and have you in my reader as well but haven't commented in a while due to me becing too lazy to type because I've been on Vacay. No excuses, I know. But you made me feel guilty and now that I'm back in the motherland, I have a long list of blogs to visit and catch up on.

86 rs27 June 10, 2009 at 3:49 pm

I started having blog pet peeves but then I realized I didn't have to read it if I didn't want to.

Fight the Power.

87 Hopers June 10, 2009 at 3:51 pm

I am a total layout snob. If your blog is fugly or generic (like, the default wordpress or blogger theme), I probably won't read it.

The generic you, of course. Your blog is adorable.

88 Margo June 10, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Too busy layouts make me want to leave… means the content has to be fabulous. No matter how great the content is, the music drives me away permanently. Haughtiness, meanness – all these things show themselves eventually – words are hard to hide behind – and it's just like choosing who to hang out with. (that's why so many people hang out here :)

89 Eggy Mayers June 10, 2009 at 3:54 pm

Completely agree, although I probably do most those things…
And as requested:

=D

90 Blondie June 10, 2009 at 3:54 pm

I have to admit I went through your list seeing if I did any of the ones listed. I am still learning. I agree with everyone's list.

91 verybadcat June 10, 2009 at 3:58 pm

Awesome idea. I forgot to bitch about the music too. It's most of the reason I'm too growed up for myspace. ;)

I love you too!

So, please to note: I will be posting more pictures and responding to more comments. You've changed my life!

I'm super excited about tomorrow…

92 Diana June 10, 2009 at 4:09 pm

gah. music that plays automatically bugs me, too.

also, if i have to scroll like a million times to see the side bar, maybe i'm just being impatient.

93 Kristina P. June 10, 2009 at 4:30 pm

I agree with every single one of these. When did these popup ads start up?!?

And the automatic music is the worst. It's always nice at work.

94 Dingo June 10, 2009 at 4:32 pm

"Blog snobs: Bloggers who think that they are too good to comment to your comment, but comment on their blog clique minions all around your comment."

People actually do this? Good god, how obnoxious! I hate feeling as if my comment is going into a void. I understand if people can respond to every comment they get but they could at least drop by every now and then. Blogging is a community after all, isn't it?

Oh, white letters on black background. The content would have to be spectacular for me to ever visit a second time.

95 Lindsay June 10, 2009 at 4:44 pm

I've been absolutely horrible about commenting recently, but I've been reading your blog religiously and I love it! Thank you for commenting on mine, I promise to be less of a lurker :)

Also, I love your blog layout. It's one of my favorites.

96 Fizzgig June 10, 2009 at 4:51 pm

i dont like ads. i think blogging is a hobby not a way of life. they take forever for me to load, and if i have to wait longer than 5 seconds for your blog to load, im not waiting for your blog to load.

i got lots to read.

97 Violet June 10, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Ok,OK, I am guilty of:
1. music automatically on on my blog
2. long posts
3. lack of pic's on posts

in my defense:
1. i was a newbie experimenting with shit, not literally, you know just trying out gadgets
2. i have a lot to say and i try not to be boring most of the time!
3. i do most of my blogging at work in between projects so the pic adding thing only happens sometimes

and…I agree with what everyone said, yes I love your odor! "poop" by CK is the best!

I <3 you!!!

98 Mr. Condescending June 10, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Long posts from unpopular bloggers. (I think you should stay away from long posts until you've got a strong following.)

99 Violet June 10, 2009 at 5:00 pm

oh, and I forgot one more thing: sorry I have so many blogs now, but the only one that is my main one is violetsworld! thanks for visiting me and following!

100 Briana June 10, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Uh. Ok so, I'm reading this, hoping to myself that I'm not guilty of 1, or all. Dammit to hell. Black background and colored letters. Shit. So, I'm in the process of re-doing it again. I just get so bored with it!

But the music thing, omg, so annoying. At least I don't have that, riiight? :)

101 jen - tsk June 10, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Look at me commenting sooooooo faaaaaaar down this lonnnnnnnnnnnng line!!

I dont like the people who never comment back. I try my hardest when I'm on a blog reading roll but never gets me anywhere. I'm not hunting for hundreds of readers…just common courtesy. Yep, I'm all about the courtesy!

Love you sweet cheeks x

P.s I don't know if my blog paragraphs display properly! One my work PC they don't but on my laptop they do…I have no idea!!

102 HannahBlue June 10, 2009 at 5:09 pm

I agree with everyone you polled on their blog pet peeves. I'm also going to have to add another peeve of mine-When people post lots of pictures of their kids either A)Naked and/or B)Eating with food smeared all over their faces.

I have nothing against parents (good ones anyway) but those pics gross me out. Sorry.

103 Sarah, The New Girl June 10, 2009 at 5:11 pm

I agree 100% with your complaints!! Especially the "I have 100 blogs" thing– ugh. I always want a star pointing to which one I'm supposed to read.

I would also agree with those who commented that grammar mistakes are a biggy. I'm not a total grammar bitch, swear, but when people are blatantly mixing up "their" and "there" or not putting quotation marks in the right spot… gr. Can't stand it.

104 just me June 10, 2009 at 5:12 pm

the music that plays automatically gets me every time.

Why is it always SO. LOUD?!

105 Redhead June 10, 2009 at 5:18 pm

As a new(er) blogger, I appreciate this list and will take heed.

Plus, I think you, LiLu, are one of the most mannerly bloggers out there! You put a lot of time and energy into your writing, commenting, and manners…and I appreciate it.

106 PorkStar June 10, 2009 at 5:21 pm

I will take some of these in to account. Definitely. I suck at responding to posts but i find it a good idea to respond to them. Also I am guilty of lame and boring comments or one word comments… sooowwy! : (

Long ass posts with stuff the person did yesterday that don't have anything witty or funny at all, don't really appeal to me.

Colors, crazy fonts, music and posts with 10 different font sizes and colors.. all in one… yeah, no, next blog.

Smells, I love smells on your blog yay! Blogs should be categorized by monkey turd consistency. A lame blog can be a squeeshy turd, explosive monkey diarrhea kind. A good blog can be a solid, non-sticky mound of turd, that you can grab and make figures. Like play doh.. or Play Doo!

107 Miss Scorpio June 10, 2009 at 5:33 pm

Quite helpful, my dear. Thanks for conducting the research for me. Pictures really? Guess I kind of suck then.

108 Shannon June 10, 2009 at 5:35 pm

You know I love you, but I don't have the time to read through 106 comments Miss Popular!!!!!! Hahaha with that being said I hope I'm not repeating what someone else has said, but THANK GOD I don't do ANY of the aforementioned peeves, including my own. YAY me.

Ps – If I dO tElL mE mMmKaYz? ThAnKz GuRl! LyLaS!

109 Miles To Go Before I Sleep...... June 10, 2009 at 5:37 pm

Ok… Ok… I'm guilty.

Now I have to figure out how to turn my music off on the side (seriously… I'm about as computer smart as an ape…) ;-)

As for comments…

I comment cause I like-a you! :) Not in the creepy sense… I enjoy all the blogs on my "blogroll" :)

ok… I'm flying to work…

110 LiLu June 10, 2009 at 5:42 pm

Racquel: Who doesn't love a little BSB?

Sarah: Rock on, sister friend.

Lemmonex: I don't use lolspeak in my blogs! Hooker.

ria: To you as well, my dear.

brookem: Just thinking about it is making my head hurt…

BMT: Exactly- I can see in my GR if you've posted, no pressure to do so! It's not like we have to check everyone daily, so no big deal.

Kate: Ooo, like hot pink font on black? Vom.

SoMi's Nilsa: Oh yes, how could I forget multiple posts in a day?? Unless something AMAZING has happened… chill.

Maxie: YOU freaking kill me.

Courtney: I just couldn't help it ;-)

Katie: I'm just not gonna work THAT hard, yanno?

Mb: And I generally leave the scene by doing the moonwalk.

ifihadtopickfive: *HIGH FIVE* Amen! I mean, just CALL it a wedding blog and let's get on with it.

Deutlich: I learned that about the full feed! My b.

Penny: The every-single-details… I can't do it. I skim like a mofo.

Megan: Exactly. If I can't get to a regular reader every now and then, I don't blame them for not coming back, yanno?

Lil' Woman: Hmmm… I think they can be edgy instead of depressing, but that's just me :-)

Ronnica: I was so glad to learn that last week (about short feeds)!

Debbi: It's a snobbalicious day up in here. Drink your hatorade, girl ;-) (And no, I really don't know what that is…)

Matt: As long as the rest of the page isn't too busy, I can handle it. But I hear ya.

lovelila: "I… must… destroy!" HAHAHA yes that is so true! As I'm frantically scrambling for the mute button…

JM: I'm with ya. I do NOT need a play by play of what you ate for breakfast!

Ashley: Simple and classic is key, in most walks of life.

[F]oxymoron: Hooray for #4! I totally think it's worth putting the time in, at least for me.

lovelila: Yay! It really makes it more of a conversation- you'll see.

Lauren: Thank you so much, dear- I love that you read, it really means so much to me!

Serena: I won't even use them on cell phones- I am KLASSY. ;-)

Libby: I just clicked over, and yours is SUPER easy to read. A+!

JM: Definitely, but I don't mind as long as you LABEL it a dieting blog or something. I don't read many "hobby" blogs… so I appreciate the heads up ;-)

Aritza: Just for you, darling.

inkpuddle: You're not long and rambling! I think yours are a good length- 4 or 5 paragraphs. And I ADORE your animanal pics! (I am no wizard… behind a curtain or otherwise.)

Meatbag: You are welcome, my dear… and thank YOU! *blushes*

lustyreader: AHAHAHAHA oh man, you better be coming Friday… I adore you.

shine: EVERYTHING needs more MS Paint!

Meatbag: So true. EXPLAIN why you are sharing this, please and thank you!

LBluca77: You make me laugh so I forgive all else. *whoops ass*

laurwilk: You don't have to blog to READ them… critique away! :-)

Shop Girl*: Agreed. And AGREED. Begging is so unbecoming…

cavy: I'll be your legal witness. CAN I GET A

moooooog35: You know how I feel about that. DELISH.

111 Je June 10, 2009 at 5:58 pm

Holy shiz – 110 comments?! Wow.

Agree on the automatic music – I mean, most people read blogs at work, no?

I seriously hate it when someone has one of the generic templates from Blogger or WordPress. That might be stupid – but I really like blogs with custom layouts. It makes blogs a little bit more legit, in my eyes. I feel like the generic layout people are just a few months away from calling it quits…

112 LiLu June 10, 2009 at 6:01 pm

Marie: A little bedazzling is okay… and I forgive you for not commenting because I get you IRL. Win! (And because you visit the people who do comment, which is just as if not more important.)

floreta: Your font's not bad. I could show you really, REALLY bad…

Dr Zibbs: You pimp me, I pimp you. Cause we're superstars like that. HOLLA. (Attention: This is totally a joke. Please don't take me seriously, people.)

Beth: I can't stand when people pimp themselves in someone else's comments. If you wrote something that relates, okay- but don't tell all MY readers about YOUR giveaway, unless we're tight like that.

KrisAKAJaney: Aaaaand I am already in love with you. Well done.

Eric: The devil's devil's music… I like it.

JFo: There is probably a reason you haven't found them ;-)

Jerrod: Aw, thanks love. The only reason I do shift is bc Blogger sucks and I CAN'T do them individually! Booo Blogger.

JPP: Yours is jazzy. I like. Now where's my crown??

Northerner: You should email me so we can have a bitch fest. LOVE IT!

miss. chief: I like to get it all out in one big hate fest. ;-)

BS&BC: You mean you're turning 20-10! Put that button up and don't even worry about that!

alexa: Were they named Rachel or Rebecca? Cause YEAH. They all were.

WendyB: Don't we all.

emvandee: I am queen of making up words… and YES I get to decide the spelling! Spellalicious!

Miss Tricky: Oh, I don't comment on Dooce either. Once they get to that status, it just kinda seems like what's the point? They're A Celebrity, Get Them Outta Here! (Did I really just do that?)

notthelife: I am so glad I realized about partial feeds, for reals! I had no idea.

tobwot: Don't worry… I think we're all guilty of loving the sound of our own (typing)…

Brandy: "Even the lame ones" I love it. Ha!

Elizabeth: Hopefully after this, the automatic music will cease and desist…

igbyh: *Beep beep* That's my bus to hell…

Katy: Bells and whistles belong at the county fair… not on your blog. Amen, my little non-turd monkey!

Julie Q: You best order your HBO, girlie! How else we will Tweet about it??

Tonya: Steal away, my love. With compliments like that, you can have anything you want ;-)

Alice: "My Sordid Blogging Past" sounds like the name of a good romance novel. Did I say good? I meant trashy yet hilarious.

Kristin: Communication, interaction- that's what this is all about, no? ;-)

Rebel Mel: Your colors aren't bad, it's simple- and it is indeed centered. At least on MY computer…

Dmbosstone: I strive to be the antithesis of cliquey. I hope it comes across.

DocE: Exactly- this is hopefully going to be taken as a tutorial and not just a total bitchfest, though I may joke about it ;-) There are newbies out there who need our help!

blissfully: I haven't… but I am SO going to! And it's okay… TB love is always welcome.

The Wife: There are blogs I read that take forever to load… I don't read them nearly as often as I would otherwise…

Andhari: Exactly- I try to mix it up over here, and I hope I succeed!

nothingfancy: Thank YOU for reading MY junk! I'm glad you're back in the swing, dear.

f.B: Oooo- but at least you'd get an Indy hat, right? And a little Asian boy?

…I've gone too far.

Stephanie: I know- that's why I respond on here, instead of emailing… people might not always come back and see it, but it's here if they want to!

Leah: Ooo, "just" is a good one! No one is "just" anything… I love it.

Miss Rosa: Non sequiturs are one thing, but I know exactly what you mean… try some bullet points on for size!

Rebel Mel: That's okay, I found which one was the real one!

113 jeluttrull June 10, 2009 at 6:05 pm

Thanks LiLu, and all those that contributed to this posting. Taking heed in some of the "pet peeves" are around the bolgosphere should help me to overcome my "freshman" complex.

114 Karen June 10, 2009 at 6:06 pm

I was a little worried that my blog would have ALL of the pet peeves, but I think I'm ok … big sigh of relief!

My biggest pet peeve is actually about comments — hate when people leave anonymous comments. Man up!

115 kimmers June 10, 2009 at 6:07 pm

Ok, I've been lurking here for a while now, finally commenting today because I couldn't stop nodding along while reading this! For the people who use tiny or neon font, blast music automatically, or have ads popping up all over the place? If I still read you at all, it's only from my Google Reader. So you're losing out on my view and my comment, if that matters to you.

The spellcheck thing is my little pet peeve for my OWN blog because I can never, ever get the Typepad spellcheck to work, and if I try to type in Word and then paste it over, weird shit happens. I think on the whole my spelling is pretty decent, but every once in a while this makes me a little twitchy. One day I will master that damn spellcheck!

Also… and I hesitate to say this because I see you doing it here and I so don't mean this as a personal attack because I think you are awesome… but I'm not a fan of responding to comments within the comments section of your post. I get why people do it, and sometimes it's fun to read when it gets a debate or conversation going on within the comments. However, I read a lot of blogs, and it's kind of too much for me to go back to each of them later to check and see if the poster has responded to my comment. I'd rather the response come via email. Plus, if I see that the poster wrote something funny in response to someone else's comment, I immediately want to scrollllllll up and see what THEIR original comment was, and suddenly I've spent two hours reading one blog post.

And now that I've commented I'll try to stop just creepily lurking around here. Cause you know we all hate that too. :)

116 Narm June 10, 2009 at 6:07 pm

You get $0.13 a day? You are like quadruple my rate!

117 The Demigod June 10, 2009 at 6:12 pm

Karen, Honey

I think your blog is fabulous. Love the colors, the pichurs, the fabulosity of the layout and LOVE. YOU.

Now werq it lady!

*snap snap

-Jack (aka The Demigod)

118 peterdewolf June 10, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Wow. I think pretty much everything has been covered.

But I am definitely with you on the automatically playing music and with the people who complained about text-speak.

I also don't really like anybody that doesn't read (and adore) my blog. ;)

Is it possible that I don't follow you on twitter? Weird.

119 LiLu June 10, 2009 at 6:28 pm

Holly: Nonsense! Yours is totally easy to read and user friendly. Let me know if you ever want help with that layout, though ;-)

headbitingprincess: Oh, don't feel that way! I love ALL of my comments equally… none of them would ever "bog me down"!

Soni: Very simple, classic, easy to read. Well played, my dear!

Falling Up: You lurker, you! I forgive you. As long as you internalize that guilt and turn it into comments. (Look, the Jewish mothers rubbed off on me!)

rs27: Agreed. But it sucks when they comment here all the time, and I'm all… ugh… I wish THEIRS was easier to read…

Hopers: I think my blog is both fugly AND adorable. And I love it. Thanks, darlin!

Margo: That's such a good way of putting it- it's just like choosing friends, really!

Eggy Mayers: I. Fucking. LOVE YOU. And I just tweeted the hell outta that.

Blondie: Yours is very eye-pleasing, my love!

verybadcat: YES re: myspace! Didn't we all quit that years ago…?

Diana: It takes a lot to get me to scroll sideways. That's just sloppy.

Kristina P: I love yours, speaking of layouts.

Dingo: I know, I was shocked too. How catty is that??

Lindsay: As long as you let me know every now and then that you're still reading! I like to know you're close. Is that creepy? (YES.) And THANK YOU re: my layout :-)

Fizzgig: Me too! Preach!

Violet: "Poop" by CK: coming to a Kohl's near you. Love you too!

Mr. C: I concur entirely.

Violet: I know, darling- we've been together since the beginning, after all! :-)

Briana: You don't have a dark background… at least not on my computer! And YES re: the music! xoxo

jen-tsk: I should have listened when my 6th grade teacher was yelling at us about respect and courtesy and such… he was right. And FYI, your type is a little 'squished' when I view it…

HannahBlue: HA! I love you. And their kids are NOT going to appreciate those pics later in life…

Sarah, TNG: Hear that, Blogger? Please to invent a star for people to put on their "main" blogs…

just me: Without fail. Sigh.

Redhead: That is really, really freaking nice to say. Thank you so much!

PorkStar: Play Doo! We should patent that…

Miss Scorpio: Oh, your blog is fab, my dear… or I wouldn't have been reading for almost 2 years. xoxo

Shannon: LyLaS! U R 2QT 2B 4GOTTEN!

Miles to Go: I comment cause I like you TOO! Love how that works ;-)

Je: It's a touchy subject, apparently! And YES- I felt so much more legit the day I made my "custom" template. I hear that.

jeluttrull: Glad to help, my dear. We were all there once!

Karen: Oh, I know- I don't mind too much if they're passive, but trolls? I will delete that shiz so fast…

kimmers: Well I'm so glad you finally said hello! And I totally get what you're saying about emailing responses- the thing is, blogger doesn't work for that half the time, and also, I like the public dialogue aspect of it. Though I DO wish I could comment on each one individually. Stupid Blogger! Thanks again for finally delurking :-)

Narm: No Google ads here. Until they fix Blogger up a bit, they're not getting a single click from me.

The Demigod: You are FIERCE, my friend. FIERCE.

peterdewolf: For reals?? Thank goodness that was remedied PRONTO!

120 Angela June 10, 2009 at 6:29 pm

The thing I hate is changing font sizes. Along with bolding, italicizing, or underlining every other word for no reason.

121 The Demigoddess June 10, 2009 at 6:33 pm

I'm annoyed by commenters who only leave a comment asking you to come visit their blogs or vote for them.. I don't like blogs that are too colorful or have too many gadgets. i like it simple with GREAT content.

122 siovhan June 10, 2009 at 6:38 pm

I HATE when the font is like light yellow on a white background. Really?! I'm supposed to be able to read that thing? Uh, yeah, no.

And I'm a blog comment novice, I never know whether to comment back on my post, or comment on one of theirs and reference their comment…

123 Liebchen June 10, 2009 at 6:46 pm

I love this list – it's actually quite helpful.

And I'm *always* blown away by your ability to respond to everyone's comments. I do love the dialogue.

124 Summer June 10, 2009 at 7:02 pm

Good post. I did find a few that I may or may not be guilty of. I'm glad I second guessed the automatic music though. I had considered Rumpshaker as a blog intro. Kidding!

125 The Vegetable Assassin June 10, 2009 at 7:14 pm

I'm going to go on record here as saying, the next time I log onto a website or blog with automatic music playing, I am going to hunt the owner down and staple their privates to a wall (even if they are a lady).

The other things you mentioned are annoying also, but the music thing kills me. Plus you get busted at work when sudden loud screeching music blasts out of your speakers.

126 Just telling it like it is June 10, 2009 at 7:15 pm

I have to say that I think you should write a book on "the rules" or at least get it published in the New York Times…
My biggest pet peeve: Bloggers that do not respond to comments. I really try hard to do so for all of my 4 readers. I might not be able to spell and I have terrible grammar but the interaction really makes me more famous in my mind and that is really all that matters…;)

127 Gladys June 10, 2009 at 7:17 pm

Here are some of mine and Thank You for your votes. I am in internets hell with very spotty service so I wasn't able to get around to everyone yesterday. Also and too I voted for you too.

Now my pet peeves
Music
Font
Busy Backgrounds that make it difficult to read
Color. I get off-put by garish colors.
Dude your kids are cute but I DO NOT want to see 43 bajillion pictures of them eating a hotdog with snot caked on their faces and mustard on their shirt. If I want to see that I will look in the mirror.
Bloggers who steal an idea from your blog and then don't give you credit.
OK I think I'm done kvetching, bitching, moaning and complaining.

128 Alanna June 10, 2009 at 7:18 pm

I'm with you (and everyone else) on pretty much all of this… obnoxious fonts, flashy ads, annoying music, and most of all, bad writing. People who post every single day with nothing to say, who can't spell, who beg for comments, who use way too many god damned !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Other than that though, blogs are great! Bloggers are the best!

129 Georgia June 10, 2009 at 7:26 pm

I get annoyed when the blogger hasn't checked the "expand entire post" in Google Reader, so you have to physically go to their blog if you want to read the entirety of the text. It's not a huge deal, but sometimes their blog will take a while to load, and by then, I'm kinda over it. Ya know?

As for text size, ever since a kind reader pointed out to me how annoying tiny text is and I changed mine to larger, I can't stand when I am forced to squint just to read someones post. You make a good point: we're getting old! I don't want to fuck up my eyesight even more just to read about how your dog peed in your bed or whatever!

130 mo.stoneskin June 10, 2009 at 7:27 pm

*frantically scrambles across to my blog to inspect layout, font, text size, colours*

You've basically summed all my hates up. I won't expand on them much. I guess the ultimate terror is this.

Tiny font, let's say grey font on black background, no paragraph spacing, barely even any paragraphs, posts are all REALLY long and your eyes dry out after reading just a sentence.

The emotionless, response-less blogger bugs me too. In fact that's what I like about you. You stopped by my place out of the blue – I don't think I'd ever heard of you or visited this cute little corner of the blogosphere – and I've come back and you've kept cruising by my place and blah blah we have a thing going on right?

Basically, blogging IS reciprocal. It really gets my goat when I see a blog, I like it, I comment on pretty much every post and after a couple of weeks I haven't had a) a reply or b) a visit. If I get (a) and not (b) then I think hey, that's ok I know you're not pissed off by my puerile comments… and if I get visits and comments back then I think "yeah man we have a thing going on". But when I get nada. Grr. Dammit. Stamp on a passing insect to express my fury.

131 Mike June 10, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Would you pimp me out?

I'm betting you have hot friends.

Oh.

blogs.

That too ;)

132 Children of the Nineties June 10, 2009 at 7:48 pm

I HATE when music plays automatically! I can never find it to turn it off. Also, black background with neon text. Ouch. My retinas can only take so much.

133 BeckEye June 10, 2009 at 7:49 pm

*sigh*

I am very, very bad at responding to comments. I used to always do it because I felt like I HAD to. But here's my thing about blogging. I look at it sort of like a conversation. I blab and blab and blab, and when I'm finally done, I let the readers get the last word. I see the comments section as THEIR space to say what they want. I already said my piece.

Plus, not all comments need responses. And I feel like I'm just padding my comment count when I comment myself.

Occasionally, I have these anxiety attacks where I feel like everyone hates me because I don't answer their comments and so I try to answer them all, but it only lasts a short time. I figure that's why I visit their blogs, so I can talk about their topic of choice.

134 Briana June 10, 2009 at 7:52 pm

I DID have a black one! LOL with lots of bright colored text.Yea, as soon as I read this post I changed it. Am I lame or what?!? I have now spent all day trying to find something different.

135 Organic Meatbag June 10, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Ah, to expand on my peeve as I mentioned earlier, it pisses me off when I come across a blog where there is no attempt to share thoughts and feelings, no commentary whatsoever…just a single picture or a single video…and then, that's it…well WHY are you showing us this video or picture, dumbass? How does it relate to you or what about it struck you enough to share it?

Or maybe even worse are the bloggers whose posts consist of 4 words…such as " My knee hurts" or "I miss him"… what the fuck is this shit? Maybe it's a miracle you could even get this sub-retarded species to hunt and peck enough letters on the keyboard to even string these words together…but if that's the case, they shouldn't have a blog. They should be wearing helmets to protect their soft skulls or sitting in their parents' basement eating crickets where they belong.

Look, what I'm simply trying to say is that I know all of us reading this are intelligent sorts that can use a computer, compose sentences and even paragraphs, we drive cars, we buy books to read instead of waiting for pretty trees to "pop up" out of the book at us, we get together with other people, we converse, we indulge in mating rituals, we wash our sheets the next day, etc… it's not any of us I'm questioning.
But I hate knowing that we work hard to put out something worth reading and then there are those that just take up a bunch of cyberspace with stupid shit…
shit, was I rambling? I'll stop now… *exhale*

136 Lady Jane June 10, 2009 at 8:05 pm

I think I do OK..except in one post I mentioned about getting low comments on my previous post…for a funny. However, now I know NEVER TO DO THAT AGAIN!!

I personally hate it when I see multiple blogs for a person…and also a blog that is too busy!

137 Kate Coveny Hood June 10, 2009 at 8:26 pm

This pretty much covers everything. Top two for me are the music and the lack of reciprocity in commenting. I'm not too hung up on getting comments – but I do it's nice to acknowledge the people who read you. Hey – I do it. And I don't have lots of free time…

138 Katelin June 10, 2009 at 8:33 pm

i'm really bad at answering comments, but i always stop by someone's blog that's commented to me.

but as for my biggest pet peeve, i'm with you on the music. freaks me out every time.

139 WuTang June 10, 2009 at 8:37 pm

I still don't know of this feed business. Research is required on my end, obviously. I hope I don't do that one by mistake though. I just started answering comments recently though because I noticed everyone else did it. Glad I hopped on that before this blog, haha.

140 Hanako66 June 10, 2009 at 8:42 pm

great post…I really agree with it. I keep up with the few blogs that I follow (yes, you) and sit down on the weekend to catch up with everyone else that has commented that week….I really do my best with that and stuck with basic black for the bloggy.

141 Kelli-Sue June 10, 2009 at 8:52 pm

haha! This is great! I am so bad about coming by to leave a comment and you are so good and comment me! I am sorry! I will be better about it…damn google reader..

but I love the music thing! I was like AMEN! I was talking to my buddy about that last night it was like after midnight and that scared the shit outta me when i went to someone's blog and music screamed back at me!

LoL

have a good night

142 nancypearlwannabe June 10, 2009 at 9:11 pm

Hey, I went to Brandeis too! Honorary Jews unite.

I hate the automatic music more than anything. I refuse to click someone's link ever again if they scare me with that shit!

143 Valerie June 10, 2009 at 9:17 pm

I have to agree with everyone on the auto music… the worst is when you can't find the damn player on the page

144 Jaxie Fantastic June 10, 2009 at 9:17 pm

I freaking HATE the automatic music thing…

Jesus, I hope I don't do any of these… I'm gonna have to print your list off and make sure, lol.

145 rondamarie June 10, 2009 at 9:29 pm

The music. I mean, hello! We are all reading blogs at work, we don't want to advertise the fact over the speakers!

146 Sadako June 10, 2009 at 9:47 pm

I agree that it annoys me when I regularly post to someone's blog and they never post on mine. Esp. if there are blogs on topics very similar to mine. And the non solid backgrounds. Those suck, too.

147 Non Sequitur Chica June 10, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Two things:

1. Partial posts in Google Reader. I have since dropped those blogs. Sorry, but I am all about convenience! I might not want to leave a comment on every post, so I am not going to click to open up your blog to read the rest of your entry every day.

2. People that don't comment back at least once when I comment fairly frequently. Maybe they don't like my writing style? Still, we are talking about some of the same things. Oh well.

148 Lisa Chelle June 10, 2009 at 9:54 pm

Your blog encouraged me to comment more. I read people every day, and rarely comment. I love your blog, and I love that you comment back. I was so excited to see you and Maxie on my page.

I, like you, just want a nice quiet little place I can nose all up in your business.

149 Eggy Mayers June 10, 2009 at 10:47 pm

Lilu: "Eggy Mayers: I. Fucking. LOVE YOU. And I just tweeted the hell outta that."

Ahahaha! I saw. =P
Sorry, you totally asked for that one… and I just had to do it.

=X

150 JM June 10, 2009 at 11:06 pm

one more…when people only do short snippets and post like 7 times a day… excuse me, you have the blog confused with something else, TWITTER. get yo shit off the blogosphere. thanks.

151 Katie June 10, 2009 at 11:14 pm

Ditto to everything. I am also a fan of pictures. I am more drawn to a blog is the author posts images with the text. Not sure why. I just am. So I try to do it myself too.

152 WickedCourtni June 10, 2009 at 11:21 pm

I <3 this blog.

And yes. It happens. Just like High School… bitches are catty in the blogosphere. I am happy to not deal with them. Fucking bitches.

Also, how tacky is that? Asking for a pimp? Fuck that. I would stop talking to a person all together if they asked me. Where has all the class gone?

Blah. I appreciate all the love I get. Especially from you… HonoraryJewFace.

153 Sebastian June 10, 2009 at 11:23 pm

Great list — but I'm sure you're aware most of it already came up on the relevant 20SB thread :) And if any of your commenters are 20-somethings that aren't yet members, go join! (http://20somethings.ning.com/)

I'm still trying to get people to subscribe by email to comments — I think it's vital for the 'conversation' of blogging :)

154 alissa June 10, 2009 at 11:29 pm

ahhh ditto on all of these! ESPECIALLY THE MUSIC. i dont know how many people ive seen bitch about it – so i dont know why anyone does it anymore? its so annoying. i mean that in a loving way haha.

another one of my pet peeves is to respond to a comment on your own comment thread. its one thing if you do that so others can see your response obviously (the way you do it). but, like you mentioned in the post, i think the best thing is to go visit their blog and share the love.

155 Nikki June 10, 2009 at 11:46 pm

I have no idea how you respond to all your fans, but I think I'll try it one day. I mean 4 comments shouldn't be hard to respond to right? I only comment because I don't want to be a turd monkey. It truly is my biggest fear. Great post. I will now blog in complete fear for the rest of MY LIFE ;)

156 Twinkie June 10, 2009 at 11:51 pm

Holy shiznit, Batman. That's a lot of griping! LOL over a hundred comments on this blog. LOVE IT!!!

I don't have anything I really "hate" except for people that abandon their blogs after I get HOOKED on them. Rat Bastards!

157 Kristen June 11, 2009 at 12:02 am

I completely agree! I love reading blogs and I don't expect people to respond to every comment I make, but when I comment a lot in a month and you never respond, I stop reading because I feel I am not worthy of your time :) haha. And I feel the same away about having the millions of blogs, I never know which one is their "main" one :)

158 justjp June 11, 2009 at 12:07 am

The top thing, is people sending hate mail for something stupid. I mean if you said kill all puppies and burn babies, you probably have some harsh words coming your way. However, if you are like me (I know you are, you hooker face you) you are pretty mellow and focus on the nonsensical. Hate mail is lame! No one cares what you feel offended you. If you are offended, just don't come back or leave a comment for everyone to see. Lame ass!

In other news, you rock!

159 A Super Girl June 11, 2009 at 12:23 am

Well, shit, 158 comments. I'm always the last to the party here at LiLu's :-)

But…I agree with it all (and thank goodness I don't do MOST of these things!). I suppose if I were to pick my biggest it would be partial feeds — otherwise, why have a reader?! Behind that, too busy of a page (too many columns, disorganization, etc.) or ugly look in a certain browser. It needs to look good in IE and Firefox, test it out and get it right!

160 justrun June 11, 2009 at 12:30 am

You did a great job with this. I don't believe you when you're all wine this and beer that on Twitter. That's a phasod. You're really organizing all kinds of informative linky posts.

161 Jenni Jiggety June 11, 2009 at 12:31 am

I hate music, word verification, blogs that have so much crap on them that they take forevvvvver to load, and Barry Manilow.

162 drollgirl June 11, 2009 at 12:36 am

DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RIGHT FUCKING ON THAT YOU POSTED THIS!!! tiny text! light backgrounds with light text! blaring music! why don't you just shoot me in the face!??!?!?

GOD!

you are so right on this. GOD!

THANK YOU!!!

163 drollgirl June 11, 2009 at 12:37 am

and one more thing. your brandeis comment? well, it made me snort. my BOSS went to brandeis a good 30+ years ago and STILL cannot stop talking about it. i do not understand that. then again, i went to a cheap cal state school, so maybe that is why i don't get it.

164 Suburban Sweetheart June 11, 2009 at 12:49 am

I really hate blatantly Blogger layouts. Come ON. Get creative.

Oh, wait. Fuckkkk.

My own blog is my own pet peeve. Jesus H. Christ.

165 andonetime June 11, 2009 at 12:52 am

I HAVE SEEN THE BLOG LIGHT.

Thank you AMEN, I mean FUCK YEAH.

Goodnight.

166 Cheddar June 11, 2009 at 1:04 am

So you're saying I shouldn't write posts that are way long without pictures or hold contests in which I entice people to comment? Right, not like I do that anyway. Only lame people do that…

*runs off to fix blog*

167 andonetime June 11, 2009 at 1:06 am

Seriously though, yes I'm double commenting – Fuck, is that a blogger faux pas too? Being a n00b blogger, I really didn't realize there was underground (ok, unknown to me) blogger etiquette, heh. Granted the loud music, unreadable text, busy graphics, text like 'tHiS' and 'ur' is also very annoying – I was surprised to see that not responding to comments is something that ALOT of people called out.

168 teasinglydiverse June 11, 2009 at 1:21 am

Amen and Hallelujah :) I can't even count how many blogs I *wanted* to like, but was completely put off by the way they went about saying what they were saying.
It's good to know I'm not alone with my hatred of the music.
As for comments, I try really hard to go back and visit the blogs of people who visit mine. Sometimes, a comment just doesn't require a response…but often it does. That said, there those "one off" commenters who don't say much and don't come back ever again. If somebody is sticking around, I want them to feel welcome! And when I consistently comment at someone's blog, yeah, I wish they would acknowledge I'm there. I don't think you can be too "big" to notice regular visitors, unless you're getting hundreds and hundreds of comments, you know? If someone comments on every one of your posts for weeks and you don't acknowledge them? Then you're just talking to hear yourself talk, in a sense!
This was a great experiment – you're very deserving of your medal.

169 Gabby June 11, 2009 at 1:37 am

I am so with you on all of this! I hate hate hate long ass posts that aren't broken up. I hate music on a blog.

I gotta say, you ALWAYS respond to comments, which is incredible cause you get so many! It's nice. I never know if I should respond on my blog (like you do) or go to the commenters blog.

170 Baking With Plath June 11, 2009 at 1:53 am

I am SO lazy about responding to comments. Now I feel bad. I wish it was easier, like how WordPress allows you to edit the comment in order to reply. If Blogspot did that, I would be more inclined to respond. I always respond to e-mails though! That counts, right?

I suck.

171 down and out chic June 11, 2009 at 1:54 am

well, i guess being comment 170 isn't as bad as 500, right?
this post was like a breath of fresh air (cyberspace fresh air). having a "style" blog and interacting with a lot of other "style" bloggers, I come across a lot of these peeves. my biggest is the music, my second biggest is being called, "little one" "lovelies", "bunnies" etc. i am not little and i don't like being talked down to. period. i feel better now, thank you.

172 Kez June 11, 2009 at 2:07 am

I agree with just about everything here.
I think you're an awesome blogger in this respect.

I avoid posts or blogs where someone rambles on and doesn't separate paragraphs, spell at least half decently or every post consists of a picture with no explanation, or a video that isn't really funny.

173 Soda and Candy June 11, 2009 at 2:08 am

Bloody hell, Lilu. I might have to start posting about boogers and tampons if it gets you in the neighborhood of 170+ comments.

I adore you, and I just want you to know that, because I often don't post comments on the more popular bloggers posts. I figure you're not gonna miss ONE comment! But I didn't know that you really do reply to all comments! It seems like it would be a full-time job!

174 amanda June 11, 2009 at 2:23 am

toats love this. umm…the music really gets me. especially if i am listening to music already. and all of a sudden, i click someone's blog-and they start intertwining. i instantly click out and don't even give it a chance. oh so sad. but come on, peeps!

175 Sass June 11, 2009 at 2:30 am

I'm in awe of you right now.

That is all.

No wait…no it's not.

I hate too much clutter and definitely music. Especially because usually the music is sappy shit that no one needs to hear anyway.

Now, that is all.

176 Lexilooo June 11, 2009 at 2:31 am

I came back again and wow, so many comments!

My biggest peeve though, since I didn't answer before, is belly pics. This extends to facebook/myspace/etc too, but I don't really want to see pictures of your pregnant belly and I really don't want to see ultrasound pics. They freak me out. I posted about this recently, actually, but it skeeves me out almost every time!

177 thedancingj June 11, 2009 at 2:36 am

Well, that sure got a big response! All I can contribute is that, when it comes to the annoying music, I think xkcd comics said it best here: http://xkcd.com/134/

178 mylittlebecky June 11, 2009 at 3:24 am

yes, yes and yes again! medal awarded! bloggers take heed (i hope i'm ok, eep)

179 ...love Maegan June 11, 2009 at 3:27 am

omg there are so many comments by the time I scrolled all the way, I forgot my response …fuck. ;)

OHMYGOD …#1 Music playing. WHY DO PEOPLE STILL DO THIS? IT'S NOT MYSPACE!

#2 …blog snobs. Now, I have to admit it's hard to get to everyone but I really enjoy reading everyone's stuff and if I'm reading I'm commenting -because it's nice to know when someone visits.

What I cannot stand at all ..and this is one girl in particular {so thank you for allowing me to vent here} who I KNOW reads my shit but never comments and then I find my ideas all over her blog. GODDAMNIT it makes me want to punch her smug-ass-annoying face! I stopped going to her blog but randomly and by accident end up following a link and there it is again, my idea …and all she would have to do is link to me.

So #3 …No blogging etiquette! I'm sure I do plenty of things to annoy people including these three dots everywhere …BUT OMG HAVE SOME MANNERS PEOPLE …and don't steal content without crediting a source!

{Now that I think about it …you may have left a comment about posting something prior to me so it's possible I'm doing it to someone unknowingly}

*Side note* Tom Cruise is so fucking good in Tropic Thunder.

{And now this is officially the longest comment in blogland. It's quite alright if you just skip right over it}

180 Little Ms Blogger June 11, 2009 at 3:28 am

Read most of the comments from people and agree with the ones you mentioned.

Personally, auto music scares the shit out of me.

Can't format so can't comment.

I try to respond to people that comment, but sometimes forget.

However, people that start a blog, write some great shit and then disappear is annoying. Why bother…

One last thing, I've seen people plugging their blogs onto other people's blogs. It's just wrong. I will check out people with clever comments, but blog whores are left alone.

181 ms. mindless June 11, 2009 at 3:41 am

fun post. just found you today via wearing mascara. like everyone else, i hate the music. i also hate the folks who are too good to comment.

182 Krystyna Lizabeth. June 11, 2009 at 4:06 am

i hate the automatic music. most times i am either watching a movie or listening to my own music or enjoying some rare quiet in my house and the automatic music scares me or confuses me.

its a blog not itunes.

183 Erin-Dot-D June 11, 2009 at 5:02 am

For me, uhhh, I'd have to say too much "internet speak". By that I mean too much LOL's, TTYL's and all that jazz, then it would be lazy typing, I get some of it, cause the word's really long and you don't want to type the whole thing. But it just looks like another language when you see Hi how r u 2 day? im gud, wuz @ this prty last nite. You get the drift, I don't type that way so I couldn't come up with the best example. But that shit drives me nuts.

184 Zan June 11, 2009 at 5:12 am

I also agree about the music. Blegh.

I will admit that I found one blogger mistake that I am guilty of, and that is long posts. I try to make them as short as possible, but I am new to this and I hope that in (short) time, this will remedy itself.

185 ClaireMontgomeryMD June 11, 2009 at 5:14 am

the blogosphere is a better place because of you. thanks lilu. we love our fearless leader.

186 Chelsea Talks Smack June 11, 2009 at 5:53 am

Oh yeah, I had the music thing…fixed it. My pet peeve…..when people talk about their dogs. Sorry, just don't care. lol. Is that a pet peeve? or just a major dislike? ha.

187 Patty Duke June 11, 2009 at 6:05 am

I love that you give love to all of your commenters. (Or is that loyal fans?) How do you manage that anyway? I don't mind that bloggers don't always comment back,b ut can they give us love sometimes. And what about those bloggers who sceen or moderate comments and don't post them. I don't mean the offensive ones. I'm talking about bloggers who read a few of the comments and decide that they have better things to do and leave the rest of us hanging. You don't have to answer, but please don't dont make me feel invisible by not posting my comment. Because I will become invisible and not read your blog. Of course this is not directed at you LiLu.

188 K @ Blog Goggles June 11, 2009 at 6:31 am

Damn, girl, this has a crapload of comments. But I love giving my two cents, so here ya go:

When people leave comments that have nothing to do with the content of my post. Clearly they didn't read it and are just commenting for the heck of it.

If it's not interesting enough for you to read it, then don't comment! Why bother?

189 sleepyjane June 11, 2009 at 7:32 am

This may have been said by another blogger but I can't be arsed to read them all (I actually started out to then decided I'm going to be here all day).

Am I the only one that thinks OMGMAYBETHEY'RETALKINGABOUTME!? And now I'm asking myself if my blog is readable. *sigh*

But with the music thing…I don't really get why people to that. 'Cause you go to a blog to read it not to listen. Usually I'll have iTunes open and playing and when the blog playlist starts it's really rather confusing. I usually go through a few emotions.

HOLYFUCKWHATISTHAT!?

No seriously, is something wrong with my iTunes? What did I do? DID I BREAK THE iTUNES?

Then realisation dawns.

Just so you know…you rock.

190 a!k0 June 11, 2009 at 7:47 am

lol love that pic of the flower, i was kinda trying to understand what it was for at first :P

hmm the music thing really annoys me, esp when im listening to my beyonce or something and suddenly theres that irritating-whining-annoying second song that comes on…i just want to close all the tabs i have open :P

191 Elizabeth Marie June 11, 2009 at 8:48 am

Honestly…what more can I say…except to go back and remove "lovelies" from my posts because Down and Out Chic might be mad and I do love some Christina. Shit.

And Maegan…just went through a content stealer and JUST FUCKING LINK people! Its so easy. Lilu did it!

And I think I am number 189…so I know you love me even if you dont get back to me on this one, lady.

AMEN. XO

192 Elizabeth Marie June 11, 2009 at 8:50 am

Ummm I meant I have just experienced for the first time the same thing Maegan was talking about.

Ok, Im on ambien and it's 2am.

193 pinkjellybaby June 11, 2009 at 9:49 am

I agree with all of yours..so I'm just going to steal those! Especially the last one. I know some people just don't DO comments, but if I've bothered to write a comment on your blog, why can't you reply? Or at least pay a return visit? That's just going to stop me commenting if i'm honest!

194 Alex June 11, 2009 at 11:00 am

For me, any hint of pimping for comments/page views is a turn-off. This goes for sites like Flickr as well.

And I thought I was the only one bothered by multiple blogs… an easy solution is just to make it clear which one is the main one.

Readability is key. And brevity is the soul of wit. Maybe it's because I'm an oldster, but I won't read anything on the Internet that's more than 4-5 reasonably-sized paragraphs.

195 michelle June 11, 2009 at 12:21 pm

i totally agree about the auto music thing…i can never hit mute fast enough!

196 JordanBaker June 11, 2009 at 12:47 pm

The automated music makes me feel like ninety, because it always shocks me and then I clutch my chest and go "MY GAWD, MY HEART!!!!!!"

Or, in the case of one blog my mother reads, forces me to hear that sacchrine, ukelele based "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" on a loop.

Also, comment beggars. "LOL I luv ur blog! Plz cum c mine!!!!" No. And. . .no.

197 LiLu June 11, 2009 at 2:01 pm

Angela: I only change font sizes when it's REALLY important. Like the word "SQUIRRRRT" on today's TMIT.

Demigoddess: YES. Don't comment and say nothing about my post. It's a sure way to make me not care about yours.

siovhan: I think either way is fine. I generally try to comment back on mine, and pay them a visit, but I am also kind of crazy. Everyone's got their own style.

Liebchen: Thanks, dear. So do I.

Summer: You're not kidding at all, are you…

Veggie Assassin: Use a staple GUN, please. Repeatedly.

JTILII: The NY Times… or maybe the Printed Blog? HELLLLO, PB!

Gladys: "If I want to see that I will look in the mirror." I love you. And YES re: giving credit! Nothing will piss me off faster…

Alanna: Hahaha- your sarcasm is positively pungent, my dear. ;-)

Georgia: Your text is BIG, and I like it! (TWSS.) xoxo

mo.stoneskin: I like our 'thing', too. And I totally agree- if I comment a few times and don't hear a peep? I ain't coming back, even if I like it.

Mike: Can't it be both? ;-)

Children 90s: I know- it's like they make the damn players invisible. Jerkfaces!

BeckEye: Responding to comments OR paying a visit- I should have been more clear. As long as you return the love in some way, I think it's cool.

Briana: Ha! I love that you changed it instantly. Have fun playing…

Meatbag: Someone needs to write a post…

Lady Jane: Your layout's totally cute. And yes- the multiple blogs thing foils me every time.

Kate CH: You amaze me with your reciprocity, truly. I don't know how you do it.

Katelin: I think the response OR the stop by is a valid response, totes.

WuTang: I checked your feed- you're fine, dear ;-)

Hanako66: I am honored to be one of your regulars, darlin!

Kelli-Sue: Haha- that's okay- as long as you're reading! Say hi every now and then though… I'm needy. :-)

nancypwb: *Gives honorary Jew secret handshake*

Valerie: I know! It's like they're magically hidden somewhere. Probably under pop up ads…

Jaxie: Ha! Print the comments, too… y'all added some good ones!

rondamarie: EXACTLY. Geez. Let me not do my job in peace!

Sadako: Right- is it really so hard to say hi after I comment on you a dozen times?

NS Chica: I am SO glad I found out everyone hates partial posts!

Lisa Chelle: Hahaha- yes, exactly! I'm glad you started commenting more- it's so nice to know who's reading!

Eggy Mayers: You smart little cookie, you!

198 Shevonne June 11, 2009 at 2:06 pm

I hate when bloggers don't respond to your comment. You took the time to respond to their post, and no response. Set your email notification, so you know I wrote you a comment!

Great post!

199 Katie June 11, 2009 at 2:24 pm

I was somewhat scared to look at your peeves, thinking I violated each one. Part of me didn't want to violate, because its bad.

But other parts of me wanted to say "I visually and blog-licly rape you every day"

ha.

200 LiLu June 11, 2009 at 2:27 pm

JM: Sounds like you've got a post of your own brewing…

Katie: I put plenty of pictures in today's TMIT just for you. xo

WickedCourtni: I <3 your face. And YES, I have been blatantly asked for pimps. Which is worse, that or the HS thing? I'm not even sure.

Sebastian: Um, yeah, I guess like the relevant 20SB thread… and the 4,000 other people who have blogged about this before… just adding my own personal 2 cents, dear.

alissa: Agreed- that's why I try to do both. (Also see: I am insane.)

Nikki: I have no idea how I do it either… and don't live in fear! I think a response OR a visit to the commenter is more than adequate- you're fine, my dear!

Twinkie: And inching closer to 200… we all feel a lot of feelings, apparently. ;-) And I promise not to quit on you!

Kristen: Totes magotes, dear. At least show a LITTLE love back, yanno?

justjp: Aw, you rock too, my dear! I actually don't think I've gotten any hate mail yet, shockingly enough… *knocks on wood*

A Super Girl: The last is usually the most important, no? And I'm so glad I learned about partial feeds… Not that I tried that for a day, or anything…

justrun: MAYBE there is a bit more 'smart' in me than I let on. MAYBE. ;-)

Jenni: Dude, no one has said word verification yet, and that totally drives me INSANE. Just like Barry.

drollgirl: You get me. You really get me. (And I got the hell outta Brandeis… it is the "Dark Year" I never talk about.)

Sub Sweetheart: Aw, it happens. Yours is fun! It's all orange and stuff!

andonetime: I think that was a compliment. I'm sure going to take it as one… ;-)

Cheddar: HAVING giveaways is one thing… pimping them out in OTHER people's comments is another. Fix nothing, my dear. xo

andonetime: Well, not responding to comments OR not paying a visit back. I think either is a valid show of recognition.

teasinglydiverse: And it is beautiful, isn't it? Eggy Mayers made it for me: http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr114/Tati_Worm/Lilu.png

Gabby: I think either is totally fine. Either one says "Hey, I saw you stopped by, and I appreciate it," yanno?

BWP: But you visit! I think that's the same as responding. And emails definitely count.

d&o chic: Hmmm. I might need to keep my pet names in check…

Kez: Thank you so much. I really try… it's good to know it doesn't go unnoticed. :-)

Soda & Candy: Well, something tells me it's more than just boogers and tampons, but thank you. ;-) And replying doesn't take me long… I always know what I want to say, I suppose.

amanda: Me either! I just can't stomach it.

Sass: Exactly- the music's never anything GOOD, like Bell Biv Devoe. What?

Lexilooo: I'm glad you did! And I think you're the first person to say that… I don't mind it on my friends' blogs, but yeah, I guess it would be weird from an e-stranger!

thedancingj: Apparently it's a controversial subject ;-)

mylittlebecky: Of course you are, dear. You're getting your own url and everything! All growed up!

Maegan: Dudette, if I EVER find someone stealing my content, I will hunt them down and pull all twenty of their nails off with pliers. Truth.

LMB: I think responding to a comment OR visiting their blog counts, so you're good. ;-) And YES re: plugging! Cut that crap out, peoples!

ms. mindless: YES re: too good to comment! What is that shiz… we're all busy, folks. (Thanks for swinging by!)

Krystyna: "It's a blog, not iTunes." EXACTAMUNDO, my dear.

Erin: Oh, I hear u loud 'n clear. Freaking ANNOYING as hell… we are not teeny boppers anymore, people.

Zan: Too long is the least offensive crime, I think. And if it's great content, not even that matters.

Claire: Aw, moving in for the e-hug!

Chelsea: Is it okay that I talked about my kittens today in my TMI? It wasn't exactly cute, if that makes it better…

201 LiLu June 11, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Patty Duke: I have no idea how I manage… it helps that you all appreciate it, I can tell you that! And I'm with you on moderating. I understand that some people have trouble with haters, but if you don't, for the LOVE, turn it off!

K@Blog Goggles: And I love getting your two cents! And YES re: random comments. That generally are pimping themselves. NOT COOL.

sleepyjane: Yours is probably one of the most eye-friendly I've seen, love. Don't fret! And THANK YOU- you rock too, my dear.

a!k0: I get a little random on you guys sometimes… sorry. :-)

Elizabeth Marie: HA! I knew what you meant, darling. I always always always try to give credit. That is definitely my biggest peeve of them all!

pinkjellybaby: Exactly- reply OR return visit. I will accept either/or, thank you very much! This is a two-way street in blogland.

Alex: TOTAL turn off. And I think the 4-5 paragraphs is a good rule of thumb, barring stuff like pictures and dialogue, of course. I'm with ya.

michelle: Me either. Not to mention the mini heart attack it gives me…

JordanBaker: I was wondering if you'd be covering the TC: Masters! Glad to see you are. And don't think I missed that "cum", missy. (TWSS.)

Shevonne: *Scrambling to find email notification* :-) Thanks, dear!

Katie: I am totally stealing "blog-licly" from you. LOVE IT.

202 Nickie. June 11, 2009 at 4:04 pm

I totally agree with every statement here. thankfully the volumes off at work, so loud blaring music isn't on my list. but my biggest pet peeve is two things people have mentioned.

a)when someone begs/grumbles about the lack of comments/followers. ((someone i follow!))
b) when you take the time to comment on people's blogs and they can't even take the time to write you back..

great post! =)

203 John June 11, 2009 at 5:46 pm

1. Lengthy explanations about why you've taken so long to post (dude, I haven't been on pins and needles) or proclamations that you're not dead (who really jumps to that conclusion?).

2. Teh instead of the. Teh lameness, it overwhelms. In the same vein: intertubes or any net-as-plumbing metaphors. Also, news flash: using nothing but lowercase does not magically elevate your prose into E. E. Cummings' league.

3. Using other people's photographs without giving them prominent credit. If someone stole text from your blog without prominent attribution, you'd freak. Images are no different.

204 Mr. Apron June 11, 2009 at 7:22 pm

My blog pisses me the fuck off.

Why can't I add more pictures, YouTube clips, RSS feeds, Tweets, Headers, streaming audio, pictures of crotch shots and other assorted media to compensate for my complete lack of content?

205 Meghan June 12, 2009 at 2:07 am

Automatic music and people that don't comment back. Grrr. And LOLtalk is cute.

206 Kali June 12, 2009 at 2:05 pm

Automatic music is the worst… Scares the hell out of my when my volume's turned way up!

I hardly ever reply to comments on my blog – instead I visit my commenters' pages. I feel bad about making people come back to my page again to find my replies… I dunno it's like a weird phobia..

Of course that would probably be different if I were like you, with 200 comments..

207 Lisa June 12, 2009 at 7:02 pm

Agree with you entirely.

208 miss rambles June 12, 2009 at 9:01 pm

granted am a few days late on replying but i've been away and my google reader was at 285 ( blame txtsfrmlastnyt) but any-ho point is….I HATE MUSIC that starts with no warning!!!if you want music put in your ipod i don't care wot u r listening too
-i hate long posts tht go on for days abt nothing
-and also the no commenting back argggh thts jst rude

basically i hve the same sort of pet hates u do and also font colours-please my eyes are 25yrs this yr they not the 20-20 vision goddesses they used to be respect tht by using ''normal'' colours

oooooh but i do love visual aids ie pics, videos etc i think it adds to the post

ok thats all (am channelling my inner meryl streep circa deveil wears prada)

209 Blaez June 13, 2009 at 5:44 am

i can be too lazy to post a response to responders… and i never remember to go back and check if i've been responded to when i post on someone's page…

i do however go to my commenters and read thier blogs and comment as well :)

210 joshlos June 13, 2009 at 1:32 pm

I've never read this blog before. It seems cool, but the grand finale entry resonates with me; namely the comment totals thing. For that reason, I'm less tempted to read this blog again. You get a crapload of comments. Do I really need to throw *another* way down at the bottom? I just have this natural tendency to be turned off by blogs that get tons of comments. I don't even know why; I just can't help it. But, to your credit, you responding to all of them is pretty crazy. In the good way. So, props to you.

211 LiLu June 13, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Nickie: Thanks darlin! I am with you… no one wants to hear the grumbling… after all, if they read about it, it's because they're READING your blog!

John: "Also, news flash: using nothing but lowercase does not magically elevate your prose into E. E. Cummings' league." This is my favorite sentence on this whole post. For reals.

Mr. Apron: LOLtalk can be cute if you don't overdo it, methinks.

Kali: This 200 is NOT the norm! I seem to have struck a nerve… ;-)

Lisa: Thanks, love.

miss rambles: No commenting back, for reals. I mean, not every day, but swing by occasionally, yanno? It's only polite.

Blaez: See? That's more than enough, I think. It's still saying thank you :-)

joshlos: I hear you completely… although I do NOT normally have 200 comments! This is a bit insane. I hope maybe you'll come back despite- I promise I read and tenderly care for every single comment. But if not, I understand.

212 Erin-Dot-D June 13, 2009 at 10:10 pm

God, I'm just thinking now, I have to be so careful when I blog, I don't want to break any of the million blog rules and be a total douche! Haha! I make my own rules. I do what I want! Ha! Nah, I'm just a lazy blogger, I have no life, therefore I have no blog! But I totally agree with most of these comments. I just need to get my blog up to par. Haven't updated my links in probably 2 years. Oopsies! I blame the beer!

213 Sarah June 14, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Blogs that are almost entirely reposted pictures. Never any substance. I would prefer to read people's thoughts/opinions/inner workings.

214 Mermanda June 15, 2009 at 1:19 pm

OW! My scrolly finger! (Okay that never gets old. You disagree?)

My blog pet peeve is… people who constantly blog about how shitty, miserable, lonely, etc. their lives are. I know blogs are a place to get it all out of your system but I just end up deleting those blogs because they are constant downers. I don't want to read that crap. Get a counselor. (I'm compassionate.)

215 StartingOver@28 June 16, 2009 at 3:59 am

Hilarious and I am so relieved to see that I am only committing one blog foul in your eyes. Sadly, I agree that music is annoying but I generally have my sound on mute so I forget I have it.

216 Marissa June 18, 2009 at 12:33 pm

I believe I'm in the minority here, but I really don't get all the gripes about "I comment on their blog but they don't comment on mine!"

Uh, what the…?

I don't want to offend, but that sounds pretty sad to me.

I, for one, don't leave comments out of courtesy. I leave them if a post provokes me to say something. Likewise, I hope people don't simply comment on my posts because they feel it's somehow "necessary." That's like doing really shitty on a group project in school but because of the other members of your group you expect to get an A regardless.

Don't get me wrong, I like getting comments. It's a visible sign that people are reading, but the last thing I want is for people to feel *obligated.* Nor do I ever want that added stress in return. It's like e-groupthink and, well, I just can't get behind that.

Blogs are supposed to be voluntary creative outlets for the individual writing them. The moment you start expecting people to "return favors," I think your e-self esteem needs to be checked.

But then again, maybe I'm totally missing something because I seem to be a minority of one.

217 nicopolitan June 19, 2009 at 10:59 pm

I meant what I said! And look at this f'n comments section – 200+ comments!? This isn't easy, so mad props for keeping up with everyone.

218 Gessono September 28, 2009 at 5:45 pm

I have been picking up internet connection with my laptop from the neighbor recently and now I have a firewall on my MP3 rocket that wasn’t there before when I was using my desktop. Is there any way to get rid of that?
