Love: It's Worth Fighting For. (Don't Worry, More Heartwarm Than Schmoop)

by rachaelgking on December 9, 2008

This weekend, after making a (hopefully lovable) ass out of myself Friday night, I spent the hours vegging out, begrudgingly watching some football, and generally catching up in the world of all things bloggery.

It was a wonderfully lazy way to spend the weekend, and I enjoyed every second of it. I laughed out loud. I sympathized. I empathized. I encouraged, I cheerlead-ed, I lamented.

But there were three posts I read this weekend that really cut me deep, in the best way possible. The kind that had wispy ghostly fingers that reached into my heart and squeezed it, reminding me that life and family and friends and love are more precious than we ever give them credit for, except in those brief moments when we are brutally reminded of our own mortality.

9 times out of 10, I read blogs to laugh. And I think you do too. But every now and then, we have to take a break from the humor, the sarcasm, the snark, and reflect on the things that are really important. We have to really put ourselves out there, and hope that our words mean something to someone out there in the blogosphere; someone who really needs to hear it.

Reading these posts, I was forced to think about the few people in my life that I love so much, but am not nearly close enough to. That I don’t do enough for. That I could make more of an effort to let them know how important they are to me; how much I love and respect and need them (despite having walked in on them spooning forking in the moonlight).

I know it’s a bit early for resolutions, but I resolve to do better. I resolve to call more. To send thank you notes, to make home-made and heartfelt presents, to hug tighter and squeeze harder. I am so lucky in my friends and family; to take them for granted would be the greatest offense I could commit in this lifetime.

I will do more, try harder, love more fiercely. And thank you, you three, for the reminder.

These posts are heart-wrenching and heart-warming all at the same time; they do not require any prior knowledge. Their messages are clear. Enjoy.

Thanks for the thought provoking post, LiLu. I’ve got some soul searching to do myself.

2 f.B December 9, 2008 at 2:59 pm

Hmm… I had the first 20 minute phone conversation with my Nana this week in a long long time. It was overdue but I am so glad I made the call. Your post reminds me how important little things like that are, and how good it feels to reconnect.

“…hug tighter and squeeze harder.” I might just steal that resolution.

Thanks for this. And for the links – they’re all perfect reminders of where the focus should be.

Thank you for the reminder as to what makes life so very important. But seriously, give me a Kleenex warning next time. My coworkers think I’m nuts staring at my computer with tears welling up in the corners of my eyes.

Holy crap. You just read my mind.

Thank you for the kick in the “bahookey” I’m off to call my mum, right now.

Nothing Fancy: ‘Tis the season.

f.B: You’re very welcome.

Paul: I’ll make it up to you… it is rare that the serious pervades my blog.

Lady: That’s exactly what I mean… I can’t wait for Xmas at the grandparents’!

Liebchen: It’s a good one to steal. No hugs were harmed in the writing of this post.

Miss Scorpio: Ha, I’m sorry! Just tell them you’re allergic to their BO.

Marissa: No I didn’t… I’m watching you. Duh.

Fiona: “Bahookey” might be my new favorite word.

Those are fantastic resolutions. It’s good to stop and think about what’s important.

Love love LOVE these.

But I’m sure you knew I would, what with my soft spot being, oh, more of a gaping wound that leaves unsightly, mushy stains on all my sweaters.

Thank you for putting them together. Today, lova, I am grateful for YOU.
LOVE your GUTS.

As much as we love all the glitz and excitement of the season, it is also a time to take stock of what’s important to us and plan how we can do it better in the coming year. Great post!

This is a beautiful post…and I’m honored to be mentioned.

Isn’t it amazing how something like blogging can actually strike such a chord in our hearts?
