A Wee Politicky Nugget

by LiLu on November 5, 2008

in berfdays, confessionary tales, hope and change and all that crap, things of a politicky nature

I’m going to be completely honest here…

I wasn’t in love with either candidate.

I’m not going to get into the whys and why nots, but let’s just say I saw the positives and negatives of both sides. And yes, some weighed more heavily than others, like the fact that THE GOVERNMENT STOPS AT MY SKIN, and ultimately I went for Obama. I just wasn’t 100% thrilled about it.

Until the results came in.

Until I saw the wonderful, emotional mayhem in Grant Park.

Until I heard Obama’s acceptance speech, and realized that he actually does want to do everything in his power to make things better. The man really believes in himself, and in us. That is incredible.

Until I realized, I am just one of millions who trusts that this man truly has the nation’s best interest at heart. (Foreign concept, I know.)

Until I saw my neighbors rallying at the gates of the White House, rubbing it in Dublya’s face. But, ya know, together.

I may not be completely in LURVE with Obama (as our President, not as a person). I may be unsure that he (or anyone) can handle the mess in front of him. I may still be terrified of the next four years, no matter who’s in charge.

But I am in love with the way our entire nation has come together.

I am in love with the way everyone hopes, and everyone believes. Watching the crowds last night, seeing them cry, hug, sing, and rejoice in the success of a common goal and dream- it was truly amazing.

I am in love with the way that racial tensions in our country have been punctured like a big ass balloon.

I am in love with the fact that the rest of the world will start to take us seriously again.

I am in love with the feeling of a fresh start, the feeling that maybe, just maybe, we are finally on the right track.

And that’s all the politicky-ness, I promise. Back to making fun of myself and TMI Thursday!!! tomorrow.

Oh, and Shannon? This one’s for you.

Happy Birthday, lady.

I broke out my Patriotic Playlist again today. Wanna borrow?

4 Doug November 5, 2008 at 5:11 pm

we might have all come together.. but I would have preferred if hundreds of people had decided not to all come together and scream about the election win from 12am – 2am outside my bedroom window.

Frecks: Thanks dear!

Fiona: He’s not half bad.

Katherine: Please!

Doug: Party pooper. You should have done what I did, and get so trashed you passed out by midnight.

It’s not often that you’ll hear this admitted…but this Canadian is just a teesy, weensy bit jealous.

As a long time Hillary girl, it took a while for me to come around…but I did.

I feel happy today.

And Doug, you are an old man.

I had the same kind of feelings LiLu. When they announced Virginia and then California to put him over the top, I was thinking, “Wasn’t this guy in the Illinois state senate four years ago?”

But then I saw the faces and everyone’s reaction in Grant Park and figured I’ll give hope a chance.

9 LiLu November 5, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Fearless: It’s about time we had something going on worth being jealous of!

Lem: Oh, Hill, we will have our day…

Foggy: “All we are say-ing, is give hope a chance…”

We shall see…

I don’t think this punctured racial tensions, as you put it, those are too deeply rooted to be changed by an election.

Hope everybody currently working in/with the government remains where they are, best of luck.

right there with ya sista! except, damn i am really bummed about our Californian prop 8 :( I wanted our gay marriage to last.

12 LiLu November 5, 2008 at 6:53 pm

Artie: I know, I was taking it a bit far with that one. But it sure FELT like it last night. And it’s definitely a big step in the right direction.

Fairy: I know, I was really bummed about that too… but it’s just a matter of time.

Yay it is all so exciting. I am loving everyone political blogs today.

14 Liebchen November 5, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Your post totally nailed it – even if you (people in general) weren’t in love with Obama from the start, you have to love the energy and hope and togetherness he’s inspired.

It would be wonderful to finally be on the right track.

15 LiLu November 5, 2008 at 7:49 pm

lbluca77: It is most definitely an exciting time.

Liebchen: And I truly “hope” that it is.

16 KassyK November 5, 2008 at 7:52 pm

I agree…I like Obama and hope to come to love him…but I am so glad he won nonetheless even if I am not in love quite yet. He did get my vote.

Its is like a massive relief run through most of the nation.

:)

Obama wasn’t my first choice, but that changed. So drastically. I’m as probama as they get these days, but more than that, he makes me want to do something to help, to make change. Inspiration’s hard to find.

18 LiLu November 5, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Kass: I pray that we do fall in love with HIM, and not just with the energy it has created in our nation.

Kristin: Inspiration is truly hard to find, and this guy’s got it. It’s a good thing.

19 I have thoughts November 6, 2008 at 12:38 am

I must have more republican friends than most because I was greeted this morning with so many emails explaining what a disappointment last night was. Such sour grapes, I tell ya.

Still, anyway you slice it, we’ve all witnessed something amazing.

20 Caitlin November 6, 2008 at 2:24 am

Exactly.

Though it’s too bad that it now looks like I copied you, rather than that we said the same thing to each other at the same time this morning and then were both like ‘ZOMG! BLOG!”….erm yeah.

LURVE ya guts.
(So glad you have officially, fully adopted that phrase ;)

21 LiLu November 6, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Thoughts: It was and will continue to be an amazing thing. I can’t wait to see that family walk into the White House for the first time.

Caitlin: Let’s just say we shamelessly stole each other’s idea. I just got to write it first, since I am a terrible employee and blog at work, and you are a saint who does not and instead gives the word lovely isms like “love your guts.”

THANKS FOR BEING YOU.
